Mountain Hawks suffer 3-2 setback at Delaware

9/13/2015 2:19:00 PM | Men's Soccer

NEWARK, Del. – The Lehigh men's soccer team came out on the short end of a high-scoring affair Sunday afternoon at Delaware as the Blue Hens captured a 3-2 win. Lehigh falls to 3-2 with the loss, while Delaware improves to 3-1-1.

"If you go on the road and give up three goals against a really good team, you're not going to win very many games," said head coach Dean Koski. "I thought we struggled on the defensive side of the ball despite knowing where Delaware was going to be dangerous. We stayed in the game and came back to score goals twice after being down by two, so a silver lining would be that we kept playing and kept competing."

Senior Jamie Luchini and freshman Alex Greene netted Lehigh's goals, while freshman Mark Forrest registered an assist. Lehigh sophomore keeper Joe Bogan made a career-high eight saves in goal.

The Blue Hens struck quickly as Guillermo Delgado got his head on a cross from Daniel Laguna from about seven yards out and put the ball past the reach of Bogan in the sixth minute to put Delaware up 1-0.

The Mountain Hawks fired their first two shots of the game in the 12th minute, one of which was saved by Delaware keeper Blai Palmi, but Lehigh wasn't able to find an equalizer. The Blue Hens added an insurance goal in the 20th minute on a left-sided shot from Carlos Perales.

The Mountain Hawks threatened with four corner kicks and two shots in the remainder of the opening half, but couldn't find the back of the net. Bogan was forced to make five first-half saves and the game went to halftime with Delaware ahead 2-0.

Luchini put Lehigh on the board in the 68th minute when he sent a cross from Forrest into the bottom left of the net to cut Delaware's lead in half.

The Blue Hens re-extended their lead to two in the 84th minute as Delgado sunk his second goal of the day. Two minutes later, a corner kick from sophomore Doyle Tuvesson was volleyed around the box before Greene was able to put a foot on it and send it through traffic into the goal from 20 yards out to bring Lehigh back within one at 3-2. Neither team was able to register any more shots in the final four minutes as the Blue Hens walked away victorious.

Delaware held a 21-7 shot advantage, while Lehigh claimed a 9-6 corner kick edge. Palmi made two saves for the Blue Hens.

Next up, Lehigh will head out to the western part of Pennsylvania to face Robert Morris Friday before taking on Saint Francis Sunday.
