BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's soccer team will play its final two contests before Patriot League play begins when the Mountain Hawks head to Robert Morris and Saint Francis (Pa.) this weekend. Lehigh opens the busy weekend at Robert Morris Friday at 4 p.m. before heading to Saint Francis Sunday at 1 p.m.
Lehigh carries a 3-2 record into this weekend's action and is coming off a 3-2 loss to Delaware last Sunday. The Blue Hens jumped out to a 2-0 in the first half, but senior Jamie Luchini cut the deficit in half in the 67th minute. Delaware had appeared to seal the game with a goal in the 84th minute, but freshman Alex Greene would respond two minutes later with a goal of his own. The Blue Hens' defense stood strong for the remainder of the game to capture the 3-2 victory.
Sophomore keeper Joe Bogan made a career-high eight saves in the defeat. Bogan ranks third in the Patriot League in save percentage (.833) and second in saves per game (5.00). Luchini leads the team with five points behind two goals and an assist. The Mountain Hawks are 1-1 away from home on the young season.
Robert Morris is 4-2 this season and coming off an impressive 1-0 upset over then 24th-ranked Bowling Green last Sunday. Senior Nico Brent chipped one over the Bowling Green keeper to give the Colonials a 1-0 lead. That score would hold up as senior goalkeeper Brenden Alfery paced the defense with his nine saves. Brent has accumulated 13 points on six goals and one assist to anchor the Robert Morris offense. Alfrey has tallied a 1.15 GAA to go along with a .811 save percentage.
Friday's game will be the second-ever meeting between the two programs. Robert Morris defeated Lehigh in the only other meeting in 1992.
Saint Francis enters Sunday's match with a mark of 3-1-2. The Red Flash offense failed to score a goal in the first three games of the season, but have since outscored their opponents 7-1 in three victories. Lehigh will be the third Patriot League opponent that Saint Francis has played this season after the Red Flash played Loyola to a double-overtime scoreless draw on August 28 and captured a 3-1 victory at Bucknell on September 11. Mario Mastrangelo leads the Red Flash with five points behind two goals and an assist, while 2014 NEC Defensive Player of the Year and NSCAA All-America selection Francis de Vries follows with four points. Keeper Andrew Garcia has tallied a 0.45 GAA and 0.875 save percentage.
Lehigh holds a 3-1 advantage in the all-time series against Saint Francis. This will be first meeting since 2001 in which the Mountain Hawks won 1-0 in double overtime.
Following this weekend's action, Lehigh opens up Patriot League play at home against Holy Cross on Saturday September 26. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. from the Ulrich Sports Complex and free video will be available on the Patriot League Network.
