Strong effort leads Lehigh over Davidson in home opener, 3-1

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team came out with two goals in the first 13:54 on its way to a 3-1 win over Davidson in the Mountain Hawks' home opener on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Juniors Amanda Granger, Gabby Tofig and senior Lindsey Schott all scored for Lehigh while junior Julia Ward made five saves in goal.
Â
"I'm really proud of this team," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Eversley. "We had some goals for today; we wanted to bounce back from our game the other day and they definitely did that. They came in scoring, early and often. They were relentless and that was definitely a theme from today."
The Mountain Hawks got off to a fast start, earning the first three penalty corners of the game. Lehigh capitalized on its third corner as sophomore Julia Washburn passed to her right and found Granger, who fired a shot towards goal which trickled in to make it 1-0 just 7:06 into the game.
Â
Lehigh continued the pressure and doubled its lead at the 13:54 mark. Schott made a centering pass to senior Taylor Mygatt in front of the goal. Mygatt fired a shot towards the cage, which was tipped by Tofig past Davidson goalkeeper Emily Leytham to make it 2-0.
Â
The Wildcats made a charge towards the end of the first half, but Ward was there to make three of her five saves in the final five minutes of the stanza. Washburn had previously made a big defensive stop at the 22:54 mark. After Ward got a piece of an initial shot, Washburn was there to clear the ball before crossing the goal line.
Â
"Julia has been great," said Eversley. "That whole defensive unit, they recover for one another and really step up for the entire team. I've been proud of them both games [this weekend]."
Â
Just over nine minutes into the second half, the Mountain Hawks had a rush towards goal which led to a 3-0 lead. Leytham got a piece of Schott's shot from just inside the circle, the ball hit the crossbar and did not cross the goal line. A penalty stroke was eventually called, which Schott converted to make it 3-0 at 44:06.
Â
Davidson broke through at 65:18 off a penalty corner as after a succession of passes, Becca Jones found Melissa Funsten in front of the goal and the ensuing shot beat Ward to make it 3-1, but it wasn't nearly enough.
Â
Final shots were tied at ten while the Mountain Hawks held a 7-3 edge in penalty corners. Ward finished with five saves, while Washburn made the defensive stop. Leytham made four saves for Davidson.
Â
"We had some great pressure and had some great connecting passing," said Eversley. "All around, the team play was excellent."
Â
Lehigh returns to action next Friday (Sept. 4) at Monmouth. Gametime is set for 3 p.m.
