BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's soccer team kicks off the 2015 season with a pair of home games at the Ulrich Sports Complex this weekend as the Mountain Hawks host Fairleigh Dickinson Friday before welcoming Pitt Sunday. Friday's game is set to begin at 7 p.m. while Sunday's action will get underway at 1 p.m. Free video of both games will be available on the Patriot League Network.
The Mountain Hawks finished the 2014 season with a 10-8-1 overall record as Lehigh secured its first ten-win season since 2006. The Mountain Hawks went 5-3-1 in league play, but fell to eventual champion Bucknell in the quarterfinal round. Lehigh returns several key starters from last year's campaign, including 87.5 percent of its goal-scoring offense from last season.
Senior Jamie Luchini and junior Justin Worley were named preseason All-League heading into the season after both earning second team All-League honors following last year's campaign. Luchini led the team with 20 points behind six goals and a league-best eight assists last season, while sophomore Doyle Tuvesson followed with five goals and four assists.
Fairleigh Dickinson returns its top two scorers from last year's 4-12-2 campaign in juniors Christian Dietrich (four goals) and Enver Caymaz (three goals). The Knights also return their starting keeper from 2014 in sophomore Matthew Weigner who made 44 saves last year. FDU was predicted to finish fourth in the NEC this season.
Lehigh and Fairleigh Dickinson met at the Ulrich Sports Complex on Oct. 21, 2014 and the Mountain Hawks erupted offensively to claim a 4-0 win over the Knights. Kyle Chin recorded his first career tally in the 16th minute and the score remained at 1-0 until the 78th minute when Lehigh netted three more goals in the next nine minutes, two of which came from Gianfranco Giammatteo and one from Tuvesson. The Knights hold a 7-5-4 all-time advantage over the Mountain Hawks.
Pitt will make a stop at Lafayette Friday before coming to Bethlehem for Sunday's 1 p.m. matchup. The Panthers finished 4-10-4 overall in 2014 and return Dan Lynd in goal who made an ACC-best 72 saves on his way to a .727 save percentage a season ago. Only six Panthers were able to find the back of the net last season and just two of last season's goal scorers return in junior Kevin Murray (three goals) and senior Patrick Dixon (one goal).
Sunday's meeting will be the first between Lehigh and Pitt. The Mountain Hawks are 5-12-1 all-time against current members of the ACC as Lehigh has taken on Syracuse, Duke, North Carolina and Virginia in previous seasons.
Following this weekend's action, the Mountain Hawks will travel to Manhattan on Sept. 2 before hosting Cornell at the Ulrich Sports Complex on Sept. 7.
