Mahalsky and Avery set for trip to NCAA East Regional

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh track and field teams will be represented by senior Ryan Mahalsky and sophomore Courtney Avery at the NCAA East Region Preliminaries on May 28-30 in Jacksonville, Fla. Mahalsky will compete in both the 5,000 meter and 10,000 meter races, while Avery will represent Lehigh in the high jump.
The East Regional Preliminaries Championship features the top 48 qualifiers for events in both the men and the women's competition. The top 12 finishers in each event will join the top 12 finishers from the West Region to advance to the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 10-13 in Eugene, Ore.
Mahalsky won both the 5,000 meter and 10,000 meter races at the Patriot League Championship meet to be named Track Athlete of the Meet. Mahalsky turned out a season-best time of 14:01.08 in the 5,000 meter race at Princeton's Larry Ellis Invitational and the time gives him the 19th seed in the NCAA East Regional. The senior is ranked 23rd in the region in the 10,000 meter race after recorded a season-best mark of 29:27.69 at the Raleigh Relays. Mahalsky will be making his second-straight appearance at the NCAA East Regional after finishing 35th in the 10,000 meter race at last year's meet. Mahalsky opens his busy weekend with the 10,000 meter race at 9:40 p.m. Thursday before competing in the 5,000 meter race at 8:45 p.m. Saturday.
Avery won the high jump at both the ECAC Championships and Patriot League Championship meet. The sophomore set a new Lehigh record with a 1.79 meter leap to earn the ECAC title two weeks ago. Avery is ranked 20th in the east region in the event and she is making her second-straight appearance in the event after competing in the high jump a season ago. The high jump competition gets underway at 6 p.m. Saturday.
