Mountain Hawks' season ends with 5-0 loss to Texas A&M in Norman Regional

5/17/2015 2:44:00 PM | Softball

NORMAN, Okla. – The Lehigh softball team's run through the Norman Regional came to an end with a 5-0 loss to Texas A&M Sunday in the resumption of Saturday's suspended game at the OU Softball Complex.

The Aggies built a 4-0 lead behind three home runs Saturday before play was suspended and never looked back as they earn a rematch with host Oklahoma in the regional final.

Lehigh's season comes to an end at 40-9. The Mountain Hawks reached the 40-win plateau for the fifth time in school history, and with Saturday's 3-0 win over Central Arkansas posted their first NCAA Tournament win since 2009.

"For us playing in a gym for about a third of our year before we get outside and going 40-9 and winning a game in a regional is impressive," Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan said. "When you lose that first game, you lose a little momentum. I thought we lost a little bit of momentum, but even in the game today and yesterday we had chances in that first inning but we lined out. If that ball goes a foot in a different direction we could've been up and things could have gone differently.

"Our kids played exceptionally well out here and I'm proud of how they represented our university."

Texas A&M starter Katie Marks retired the first 11 Mountain Hawks after play was resumed and 12 batters overall before senior Brandi Hawkins delivered a pinch hit single in her final at-bat. Marks finished with a three-hit shutout with one walk and three strikeouts as she improves to 14-3.

The Aggies added a fifth run in the fifth inning as April Ryan hit a one-out double and Cali Lanphear followed with a RBI single up the middle. Lanphear took second on the throw home but was then thrown out at third on a throw by freshman Carolyn Wright.

Senior Emily Bausher went the distance for Lehigh in her final appearance in the brown and white. She allowed three earned runs on six hits with two walks and a strikeout as she concludes her senior season at 21-7.

Lehigh's three hits came from Hawkins and juniors Alexis Watanabe and MacKenzie Velasquez.

The Mountain Hawks will graduate four players on Monday in Bausher, Hawkins, Emma Capetz and Cassie Waggy.

"Our seniors provided tremendous leadership," Troyan said. "They wanted to make it as far as they could and they wanted to bring their best on a daily basis. They led the way and they were absolutely tremendous."

With its two wins over Lehigh in the Norman Regional, Texas A&M has evened the all-time series between the schools at 3-3.
