BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Thirteen women and seven men will represent the Lehigh track and field teams at the ECAC/IC4A Championships this weekend at Princeton University. The select athletes qualified for the meet based on predetermined standards and will be competing against the best of the best from Division I schools in the northeast in the three-day competition that begins Friday. Those that finish in the top eight of their respective events earn All-East distinction.
Two weeks have passed since the Mountain Hawks last competed at the Patriot League Championships at Army West Point's Shea Stadium. The women earned four event titles and finished fourth at the championship meet, while the men grabbed fifth and also earned four first-place finishes.
Sophomore Courtney Avery, the three-time Patriot League high jump champion, looks to add the fourth All-East distinction to her already decorated Lehigh career. Senior Natalie Bates, who won the heptathlon at the league championship meet, will represent Lehigh in the multi-event along with junior Gabrielle Wardle and sophomore Sarah Cassidy. Wardle will also compete in the high jump. Senior Carly Deskins will represent the Mountain Hawks in the javelin after finishing atop the podium at the league championship meet and will be joined by sophomore Melody Walthers.
On the track for the women, sophomore Katie Hatler will compete in the 100 meter hurdles after finishing as the league runner up two weeks ago. Senior Victoria Mullane looks to earn her second-straight All-East distinction in the 800 meter run after grabbing the honors during the indoor season. Junior Arielle Weiner will represent the Mountain Hawks in the 10,000 meter race. Junior Ann O'Connell, sophomore Brenna Clark and freshmen Tyler Scanlin and Hannah Leskow will compete in the 4x800 meter relay.
Freshman Trevor Knowles will represent the Lehigh men in the decathlon after earning the league title two weeks ago and being named the Rookie of the Meet. Sophomore Daniel Boardman will compete in both the high jump and long jump after winning the long jump at the league championship meet. Senior Benjamin Beauchamp will represent Lehigh in both the discus and hammer throws, while sophomore Daniel Reichenbach will compete in the triple jump.
On the track, senior Ryan Mahalsky will compete in the 1,500 meter run after being named the Track Athlete of the Meet two weeks ago at the Patriot League Championship meet. Juniors Sean Burke and Daniel Reilly will represent the Lehigh men in the 10,000 meter race.
Action gets underway from Princeton's Weaver Stadium at 12 p.m. Friday. Next up, athletes who qualify for the NCAA East Regional Championships will compete May 28-30 in Jacksonville, Fla.
