BETHLEHEM, Pa. – With the Patriot League Championship just over a week away, the Lehigh women's golf team will play one final spring tournament before the championship as the Mountain Hawks will take part in the Red Flash Invitational beginning Monday at Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown, Pa.
The four-team field features Lehigh, Niagara, Wagner and the host Red Flash of Saint Francis. The tournament will feature 36 holes of golf on Monday with the final 18 holes set for Tuesday.
Last year Lehigh won the team title in a seven team field in a Red Flash Invitational that was shortened to 36 holes due to rain. The Mountain Hawks shot 311-303 for a final score of 614 to defeat Youngstown State by four strokes. Current senior Alyssa Scheyd led Lehigh tying for fourth place at 153 (72-81). Scheyd recorded a hole-in-one on the par three 14th hole at Sunnehanna Country Club in last year's opening round.
The Red Flash Invitational is the third of four spring events for the Mountain Hawks. Lehigh last competed at the Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate March 30-31, where the Mountain Hawks finished in 12th place. Senior Kelly Moylan led the Mountain Hawks in Virginia, tying for 22nd place. Lehigh's scoring team at the Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate consisted of Moylan, Scheyd, senior Melanie Dickens, junior Nicole Feierberg and sophomore Elizabeth McGarrigle, while freshman Casey Farmer competed as an individual.
Following the Red Flash Invitational, Lehigh will shift focus to the Patriot League Championship, April 18-19 at the Naval Academy Golf Course in Annapolis, Md. Lehigh won the inaugural team title in 2013 and has had the individual league champion in each of the first two seasons of the championship. This year, with the addition of Richmond as the sixth Patriot League member in women's golf, the team and individual champions are eligible for a berth to the NCAA Regionals.
