Mountain Hawks to open spring season Monday at Lonnie Barton Invitational

3/8/2015 5:56:00 PM | Women's Golf

BETHLEHEM, Pa.—The Lehigh women's golf team will begin its 2015 spring season Monday at the Lonnie Barton Invitational, hosted by LIU-Brooklyn at the LPGA International course in Daytona Beach, Fla.

The two day tournament will feature 14 teams that will play the course that will host the NEC Championship later this year. In addition to Lehigh and LIU-Brooklyn, other teams in the field include Albany, Bucknell, Central Connecticut, Delaware State, Fairfield, Monmouth, Quinnipiac, Sacred Heart, St. John's, Saint Francis (Pa.) Siena and Wagner.

The Mountain Hawks were picked second in the Patriot League Preseason Poll with a pair of first place votes and 39 total points. Lehigh finished third at last year's championship and this year, with the addition of Richmond as the sixth Patriot League member in women's golf, the Patriot League Champion can now earn an automatic berth to the NCAA Regional Championships.

Lehigh played in five fall tournaments, finishing in the top half of four of them. The Mountain Hawks closed the fall with a second place finish in their Lehigh Invitational, while Lehigh also finished fourth out of 15 teams at the Chesapeake Bay Invitational in another strong fall showing.

The Mountain Hawks are led by senior captain Kelly Moylan, a two-time All-Patriot League selection. She will provide leadership along with fellow seniors Melanie Dickens and Alyssa Scheyd. Junior Nicole Feierberg is also a returning All-Patriot League performer. The rest of the roster features junior Tess Jennings, sophomores Elizabeth McGarrigle and (redacted) , and freshmen Casey Farmer and Megan Moylan.

The field at the Lonnie Barton Invitational includes last year's Patriot League Champion Bucknell, while the host Blackbirds are the three time defending NEC Champions.

The Lonnie Barton Invitational is the first of three regular season spring tournaments leading into the Patriot League Championship. At the end of March Lehigh will head to Williamsburg, Virginia for the Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate, hosted by William & Mary. Right before the league championship, the Mountain Hawks will play in the Red Flash Invitational in Johnstown, Pa.

Navy will host the Patriot League Championship April 18-19 in Annapolis, Md.

Action at the Lonnie Barton Invitational begins at 8 a.m. Monday.
