
Sprinters pace Mountain Hawks on day two of Patriot League Championship

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Lehigh's corps of sprinters carried the day for the Mountain Hawks on day two of the Patriot League Championships, Thursday at Bucknell's Kinney Natatorium. Three Mountain Hawks made the A final in the 50 yard freestyle while Lehigh's 200 free relay team finished second to a strong Navy team.

The Mountain Hawks finished the second day of competition in fifth place with 149 points.

The highlight for the Lehigh men was the 50 free with three Mountain Hawks making the championship final. Sophomore Jamal Willis was the top qualifier for Lehigh and finished second in the finals with a time of 20.30, just .08 seconds behind Chris Szekely of Army. Classmate Justin White finished fifth with a time of 20.48 seconds while freshman Zach Tieke clocked in at 20.86 seconds to finish eighth.

In the 200 free relay, Willis, Tieke and White teamed with senior Owen Dunbar to post a time of 1:20.34, good for second place, .32 seconds behind Navy.

Lehigh totaled five consolation finalists in Thursday's other two events. Sophomore Jacob Moyar and senior Danny Bennett finished 14th and 15th respectively in the 500 free. Moyar posted a finals time of 4:31.53, while Bennett clocked in at 4:32.62.

Three Mountain Hawks competed in the B final in the 200 IM led by senior Jake Greene, who finished second in the race and tenth overall with a time of 1:52.16. Senior Sean Brant finished 14th in 1:53.52 and junior Jake Hassel finished in 16th place overall with a time of 1:55.01.

Eleven time defending champion Navy holds the team lead with 318 points, 114 more than second place Bucknell. Lehigh sits 46 points behind fourth place Army and 44 ahead of sixth place Loyola.

The Patriot League Championships continue Friday from Bucknell with preliminaries set for a 10:30 a.m. start and finals set to begin at 6 p.m.
