BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Two 5-4 teams still in the Patriot League title hunt meet Saturday at Andy Kerr Stadium as Lehigh visits Colgate. The Raiders can clinch the league's automatic bid to the FCS playoffs with a win over the Mountain Hawks, while Lehigh needs to win its final two games to claim at least a share of the league title. Last week Lehigh raced to a 41-10 halftime lead on the way to a 51-38 victory over Holy Cross at Goodman Stadium. Freshman quarterback Brad Mayes completed 17-of-21 passes for 239 yards and three touchdowns, and was named the Patriot League's Offensive Player and Rookie of the Week for his efforts.
Â
Winners of three straight games, Colgate can clinch the Patriot League's automatic berth to the FCS playoffs with a victory over Lehigh. The Raiders, like the Mountain Hawks are 5-4 overall, but Colgate has posted three consecutive wins over Georgetown, Fordham and Lafayette to move to 4-0 in the Patriot League.
Â
Colgate boasts the league's top rushing offense, at 191 yards per game, led by dual-threat quarterback Jake Melville and a trio of strong running backs in John Wilkins, James Holland and Demetrius Russell. Holland scored three touchdowns in Colgate's 28-19 win over Lafayette and has seven on the season. Melville has thrown for seven touchdowns and just one interception in 245 attempts. Linebacker Kyle Diener leads the Raider defense with 85 tackles.
Â
Lehigh's 41 first half points against Holy Cross marked the first time in 13 years that Lehigh scored 40 points in a half. In 2002, the Mountain Hawks built a 49-0 halftime lead on Georgetown en route to a 69-0 win at Goodman Stadium. Two years ago Lehigh scored 38 points in the first half of a home win over Georgetown. The Goodman Stadium record for points in a half is 51, set by Lehigh against Central Connecticut State in 2001. Lehigh's 51 total points were its most since scoring 51 against CCSU in the 2013 season-opener and the most in regulation since a 50-34 win at Colgate in 2005.
Â
Sophomore safety Quentin Jones has stepped up as a force in Lehigh's defensive backfield. Jones picked off a pair of passes in the win over Holy Cross, the first of which led to Lehigh's sixth touchdown of the first half and the second, which led to the Mountain Hawks' final touchdown. The Lawrenceville, Ga., native became the first Mountain Hawk to intercept two passes in a game since fellow Georgia product Bryan Andrews '13 picked off two in Lehigh's league title-clinching win over Georgetown in 2011. Jones has 32 tackles this season and leads Lehigh with three interceptions.
Â
For four seasons from 2009-2012 Lehigh led the Patriot League in sacks. In fact, the Mountain Hawks led the nation in sacks in 2009. Lehigh's sack production has dropped over the last two seasons, with the Mountain Hawks registering just 20 in 2013 and 15 last year, which ranked last in the Patriot League. Lehigh's pass rush has already recorded 24 sacks through nine games, including a season-best five against Georgetown. Senior Noah Robb leads the way with five sacks and has three in Lehigh's last two games.
Â
As is the case in many of the last 20 years, the Lehigh-Colgate game has significant Patriot League championship and FCS playoff implications. For Colgate, the formula appears simple: a win Saturday gives the Raiders at least a share of the league title and the league's automatic bid to the FCS playoffs. Lehigh needs to beat Colgate and Lafayette to earn at least a share of the league title and would also need Georgetown to beat Fordham to win the auto bid. Should Colgate, Fordham and Lehigh all finish with 5-1 league records, the athletic directors of the other four Patriot League schools (Bucknell, Georgetown, Holy Cross, Lafayette) would select the automatic qualifier for the FCS playoffs.
Â
Lehigh meets Colgate for the 54th time with the Raiders holding a 28-23 lead. There have also been two ties. Lehigh has won four of the last five meetings, but Colgate's win in 2012 gave the Raiders the Patriot League title. Andy Coen is 5-4 versus Colgate and 2-2 versus the Raiders at Andy Kerr Stadium.
Â
Saturday's game kicks off just after 1 p.m. from Andy Kerr Stadium in Hamilton, N.Y. The game will be televised in Central New York by Time Warner Cable Sports and will be streamed on the Patriot League Network. Audio coverage will be available on ESPN Radio 1230 and 1320 and ESPNLV.com, with pregame coverage beginning at noon.
