BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After competing in five meets this season, the Lehigh men's cross country team is ready to head to Hamilton, N.Y. for the Patriot League Cross Country Championships this Saturday. The men enter this weekend's championships ranked 11th in the Mid-Atlantic Region, with Patriot League foes Navy (4th) and Bucknell (10th) ranked ahead of the Mountain Hawks. Lehigh was tabbed sixth in this year's league preseason poll.
Lehigh finished sixth in last year's championship, which it hosted at the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course. The team was led by departed senior Ryan Mahalsky who crossed the finish line in sixth place, en route to First Team All-League honors. Current senior Sean Burke finished 22nd overall, second on the team (24:47.2), one spot ahead of departed senior Jimmy Miller. Patrick Reilly, now a sophomore, came in fourth among Mountain Hawks with a 32nd place time of 25:03.3. Ryan Cooney and John Tolbert both represented Lehigh's returners in the top seven.
Most recently, Lehigh split up and competed at both the Princeton Invitational and Leopard Invitational on Oct. 17. Lehigh finished 8th of 21 teams at Princeton, which featured regionally ranked team such as Penn, Pitt, Villanova, UMBC, La Salle and Patriot League foe Bucknell. Reilly was the Patriot League's top finisher (15th), with senior teammates Evan Hardy and Evan Ward rounding out Lehigh's top three. At Lafayette's Leopard Invite, freshman Mitchell Daddario led the way in 26th place, with Kyle Leonard (41st) and Ryan Grace (47th) following behind.
This year, Reilly has led Lehigh in three of his four races, including an individual title at the Lehigh Invitational. Sophomore Scott Mason took home first place overall in a dual meet with Lafayette, and has finished in Lehigh's top seven in two of his three races this season. Ward has finished no lower than fourth on the team in each of his four races, and Cooney has been in the top seven in his four races thus far. Hardy has accumulated three top-five finishes among Mountain Hawk racers this season.
The last time Colgate hosted the league championships in 2012, Lehigh captured its first-ever Patriot League title, edging out Navy by two points. Hardy, who was a freshman at the time, was a part of the team's top seven, while Miller, Mahalsky and Tyler Mueller all finished in the top-10 overall. The Brown and White followed that up with a second place performance in 2013, where Mueller became the first Lehigh runner to win the individual title and be named PL Runner of the Year.
The day's events are scheduled to begin with the men's championship race at 11 a.m., followed by the women's race at noon. Complete results and a recap will be available on Lehighsports.com at the conclusion of the races.
