BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Three Lehigh men's basketball players have been named team captains, as recently announced by head coach Brett Reed. Senior Devon Carter, junior Tim Kempton and sophomore Kahron Ross will share captaincy of the Mountain Hawks. Beyond the captains, Lehigh features several other leaders who look to make their impact during the 2015-16 season.
"In order for a team to be successful, it needs its players and coaches on the same page," said Reed. "We are fortunate to have high-character individuals within our program who have adopted our vision, understand our values and are consistently performing to those high standards. With that, there also comes the need to identify the leaders amongst our team who will take on additional responsibilities to be a liaison between our team members and our coaching staff."
Carter has grown tremendously over his Lehigh tenure, finding himself as a key senior on a Lehigh squad picked No. 1 in the Patriot League preseason poll. Coming back from an injury late in his freshman season, Carter got into 12 games as a sophomore then 17 as a junior.
"Devon has experienced adversity; he's experienced highs and lows as a member of our program," said Reed. "We've seen a tremendous developmental curve, perhaps none more noteworthy than the fact that he's put himself on the Dean's List academically and has really embraced his academic opportunities here at our university. He's also embraced promoting our team standards and pushing towards a common goal. I believe because of his variety of experience, he is somebody who his teammates can look to in a very positive way as a mentor."
The defending Patriot League Player of the Year, Kempton led the Mountain Hawks in scoring (15.3 points per game) and rebounding (8.7) in 2014-15. He also led the league in rebounding. Kempton developed into not only one of the top forces in the Patriot League, but also region and even nation. He averaged a double-double in all three games against power conference foes last season, leading Lehigh to wins at DePaul and Arizona State, along with a tight loss to Villanova, an eventual No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
"Tim has been a focal point for our program with his offensive and defensive presence," said Reed. "Because of that influence on the floor, his teammates often look to him to provide leadership. Tim is accepting and developing in that particular role. He's learning how to become more vocal and how to influence other people at a higher level. We're asking him to step forward and provide that type of leadership, while also being able to rely on some of the other leaders around him."
The team's point guard, Ross jumps into a captaincy role after a stellar freshman season, becoming Lehigh's first sophomore captain since C.J. McCollum in 2010-11. Ross enjoyed a stellar freshman campaign, becoming Lehigh's fifth Patriot League Rookie of the Year in eight season. He averaged 10.4 points and a league-leading 5.8 assists to pace the Mountain Hawks' offense.
"By nature of his position, Kahron is a floor general," said Reed. "As a point guard, we're looking for him to become more vocal and more assertive as a team leader. I think the recognition by his teammates as being one of our top leaders will help to promote his confidence in stepping forward and assuming that role on a more consistent basis."
The Mountain Hawks open their season in just over two weeks when they head to Syracuse to face the Orange on Friday, Nov. 13. Opening tipoff is set for 7 p.m. After a road game at Canisius, Lehigh will welcome preseason Ivy League favorite Yale for its home opener on Thursday, November 19 at 7 p.m. Tickets are available and can be purchased at LehighTickets.com or by calling 610-7LU-GAME during normal business hours.
