
Lehigh to play three road matches in four days beginning with Lafayette Wednesday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh volleyball team will kick off the second half of Patriot League play Wednesday when the Mountain Hawks head to archrival Lafayette for the first of three road matches in four days. First serve against the Leopards is set for 7 p.m. and the Mountain Hawks will then head to Navy at 7 p.m. Friday and Loyola at 2 p.m. Saturday. Free video of all three matches will be available on the Patriot League Network.
The Mountain Hawks are coming off a weekend in which Lehigh split two matches against Army West Point and Holy Cross to move its record to 13-10 overall and 5-3 in league play. Lehigh dropped a straight-set match to a tough Army team Friday, but recovered nicely with a straight-set victory over Holy Cross Saturday. Senior Stephanie Slater anchored the offense against the Crusaders with 14 kills and a .387 hitting percentage while classmate Amy Matula tallied 25 assists in the win. Lehigh hit .271 as a team and limited the Crusaders to a clip of .126.
Senior Leah Turner leads the team with 277 kills and is followed by Slater with 235. Senior Ana Vhrel has added 192 kills to go along with her team-high 34 service aces and 84 total blocks. Matula has dished a team-high 614 assists while junior Mariah Brantley has accumulated 302 digs. As a team, Lehigh sits atop the Patriot League in kills (13.66 per set) and assists (12.63 per set).
Lafayette enters Wednesday's match with a 10-9 overall mark and 2-6 record in league play. The Leopards have dropped their last five matches after starting the league season with a 2-1 record. Lafayette has lost four-straight 3-0 matches to Army, Holy Cross, Colgate and Navy. Eight of the Leopards' ten wins have been secured at home compared to their 1-5 away record.
Brianne Giangobbe leads the Leopards with 208 kills, while Katherine Stevens follows with 127. Freshman Maria Balus has dished out a team-high 604 assists and is a three-time recipient of the Patriot League Rookie of the Week. Jet Manzi leads the league with 33 service aces. As a team, Lafayette currently leads the league in service aces (1.72 per set) and digs (15.75 per set).
The Leopards claimed the season's first meeting 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-19) inside Leeman-Turner Arena on Sept. 23. The Lafayette win snapped Lehigh's 11-match rivalry win streak, but the Mountain Hawks still control the all-time series 59-30.
Navy enters Friday's 7 p.m. match with a 2-6 mark in league play and 4-17 overall record. The Mids picked up their first two league wins last weekend as Navy beat both Loyola and Lafayette 3-0 at home. Freshman setter Patricia Mattingly earned Patriot League Rookie of the Week recognition for her efforts after averaging 9.33 assists and 2.67 digs per set in the two victories.
Maggie Phillips anchors the Mids offense with 136 kills, while Olivia Kruger follows with 131. Mattingly leads the squad with 505 assists and Sydney Shearn has registered a team-best 186 digs. Navy is hitting just .158 this season and has allowed its opponents to hit .227.
The Mountain Hawks have won the last four matchups against Navy including a 3-1 victory on Sept. 26 inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. Matula registered 44 assists to go along with seven kills, a .400 attack percentage and six digs. Turner secured a double-double with a team-high 16 kills and ten digs, while Slater chipped in 12 kills. The Mids hold a slight 28-26 edge in the all-time series.
Loyola will take on Lafayette Friday evening before welcoming the Mountain Hawks to Reitz Arena at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Greyhounds hold a 6-17 overall record and are 1-7 in the Patriot League. Loyola dropped straight-set matches to American and Navy last weekend. The Greyhounds' lone Patriot League win came against Holy Cross in straight sets on Oct. 4.
Stacey Kazalas leads the team with 242 kills, while Molly Cichosz follows right behind with 241. Molly Werts has accumulated a team-high 649 assists and Micah Duzey leads the squad with 289 digs. Loyola has hit .168 as a team compared to its opponents' average of .239.
Lehigh has won the last nine meetings against Loyola, including a 3-0 victory inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall on Sept. 27. Turner led the way for Lehigh in the season's first meeting with 12 kills and an outstanding .526 attack percentage. Slater and sophomore Whitney Krantz contributed nine kills apiece, while Vrhel chipped in eight kills and six total blocks. The Mountain Hawks lead the all-time series 11-3.
Lehigh will return to action next Friday at Colgate. The match is slated for a 6 p.m. start.
