BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh volleyball team couldn't get its offense rolling in a 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-19) loss to Lafayette Wednesday night inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall in the Patriot League opener for both teams. The Leopards improve to 9-3 overall with the win and snap an 11-match losing streak to the Mountain Hawks, while Lehigh falls to 7-8 with the loss.
Lafayette hit .306 as a team and limited Lehigh to a .140 attack percentage. Senior Leah Turner led the Mountain Hawks with 12 kills, while classmate Stephanie Slater followed behind with nine. Senior Amy Matula dished a team-best 15 assists and freshman Emily Develle led the squad with ten digs.

The Leopards got out to a quick 7-2 lead in the opening set to force an early Lehigh timeout. Kills from senior Ana Vrhel, Turner and Matula helped Lehigh string together a 9-6 run that pulled Lehigh within two points at 13-11. Lafayette responded by scoring five of the next six points to go ahead 18-12 and the Leopards eventually held set point at 24-16. Lehigh wouldn't go quietly and used three kills from Turner to help fight off six set points, but a kill from Elizabeth Walsh eventually gave the Leopards a 25-22 set-one win.

The second set started out much like the first as Lafayette grabbed an early 7-2 advantage. The Mountain Hawks scored the next two points to narrow the Leopard advantage to three, but a 9-3 Lafayette run put Lehigh in a 16-7 hole. Back-to-back kills from Turner were followed by a Slater spike to make the score 16-10, but that would be the closest Lehigh would get the rest of the way as Lafayette claimed the second set 25-17 to take a 2-0 match lead.

The Leopards broke open a 4-4 tie with a 7-2 run in the third set to take an 11-6 lead. The Mountain Hawks eventually worked their way back within three at 18-15 with the help of a 5-1 run that saw two kills apiece from Turner and Vrhel. A block from Slater and Vrhel kept Lehigh within three at 22-19, but a kill from Jet Manzi was followed by back-to-back spikes from Brianne Giangiobbe as the Leopards earned a 25-19 set-three win and 3-0 match victory.

The Mountain Hawks remain home this weekend when Lehigh hosts Loyola at 7 p.m. Friday before welcoming Navy at 4 p.m. Saturday. Free video of both matches will be available on the Patriot League Network.
