Mountain Hawks earn 3-1 win at Sacred Heart

10/13/2015 2:29:00 PM | Field Hockey

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Junior Marissa Glatt opened the scoring then freshman Teresa Carotenuto added a pair of second-half goals to erase any doubt as the Lehigh field hockey team defeated Sacred Heart 3-1 on Tuesday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks controlled play, owning a dominant 27-10 shots advantage, on the way to their second win in the last three games.

"Teresa and Marissa played great," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Eversley. "All the lines were connecting beautifully, especially in the second half. Julia (Ward) had some great saves, too."

Lehigh tallied the game's first three shots on goal, holding the Pioneers without a shot until the 12th minute, which was saved by Lehigh junior goalkeeper Julia Ward. Glatt buried the next shot at the 13:57 mark, converting a hard shot from the top of the circle.

The Mountain Hawks went into a halftime with an 8-2 edge in shots, with both Sacred Heart chances stopped by Ward. Sacred Heart goalie Mary Altepeter was also strong, making three first-half saves.

In the second half, Lehigh came out with a vengeance, creating three penalty corners in the first 7:14. Mountain Hawks also had five shots in that span, but couldn't beat Altepeter. On their sixth straight shot, Carotenuto scored on a penalty stroke goal to make it 2-1 at the 42:47 mark.

Sacred Heart responded with the game's next two shots and four of the next five, but the momentum was short-lived as Carotenuto scored her second goal of the game at 56:30. Carotenuto now has three multi-goal effort in the last five games with eight goals in that span. She leads the team and is tied for the Patriot League lead with nine goals on the season.

The Pioneers added a goal with just 12 seconds remaining, but it wasn't nearly enough.

Along with Lehigh's 27-10 shots edge, the Mountain Hawks held an 8-4 edge in penalty corners. Ward finished with four saves while Altepeter made 11. Junior Janelle High made a pair of defensive saves.

Lehigh returns to Patriot League play on Saturday when the Mountain Hawks host Boston University at 12 p.m.
