Mountain Hawks hang tough in 3-0 loss to No. 17 Boston University

10/17/2015 2:24:00 PM | Field Hockey

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team hung tough against first-place and No. 17 ranked Boston University, holding the Terriers' attack at bay while earning quality opportunities of its own in a 3-0 defeat on Saturday. In the end, the Mountain Hawks allowed just three goals, which tied for Boston University's season low against Patriot League foes. In the Terriers' other four league games, they had scored three, nine, five and six goals.

"I thought we gave a good effort for 70 minutes," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Eversley. "We had a lot of good plays as a team, up the field and on defense. It was a competitive game."

After Boston University fired the game's first shot in the sixth minute, junior Marissa Glatt responded with a shot just over four minutes later. The Terriers broke a scoreless tie at the 13:58 mark off their second penalty corner of the game as Sofi Laurito made a deflection past Lehigh junior goalkeeper Julia Ward to make it 1-0.

Ward stood tall over the middle stages of the first half, stopping Boston University's next four shots on goal, before the Terriers' Laurito converted a penalty stroke at the 27:21 mark to make it 2-0.

Lehigh had sustained pressure early in the second half, earning two early penalty corners which led to two shots. Boston University responded with some opportunities of its own, but couldn't add to its lead. The Mountain Hawks had an answer in the 52nd minute, firing shots in succession, from junior Gabby Tofig and freshman Isabel McKeown, but Terriers' goalkeeper Cammy Jensen made both saves.

Boston University added to its lead at the 65:23 mark as Kali Shumock finished a deflection off a penalty corner. Lehigh responded with one of its best chances of the game as freshman Lauren Dice's shot forced Jensen to make a strong save, which preserved her team's 3-0 victory.

Final shots were 20-7 in favor of the Terriers while Boston University held a 12-2 edge in penalty corners. Ward finished with nine saves while Jensen tallied four.

"We moved as a unit, both on attack and defense," said Eversley. "The effort of the defense has been consistent all year, so I thought they did a good job. As a whole, we allowed too many corners. They're a good executing corner team, so that's something we want to fix going into tomorrow."

Lehigh returns to action in 24 hours when the Mountain Hawks host Lock Haven at 12 p.m. on Senior Day. Erin Ricker, Alex Beatson, Caitlin Bryan, Zoey Pacheco, Lindsey Schott, Taylor Mygatt and Kat Kneizys will all be recognized prior to their final home game in the Brown and White.
