WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Lehigh men's soccer team trailed 2-1 for a majority of the second half and was able to find an equalizer in the 88th minute at Army West Point Sunday afternoon, but the Black Knights scored the game-winning goal just 20 seconds later to capture a 3-2 victory. Senior Jamie Luchini and freshman Alex Greene scored the Mountain Hawk goals. Lehigh falls to 1-3 in league action and 6-5-1 overall, while Army West Point improves to 1-1-1 in the Patriot League and 3-4-3 overall.
"This was an incredibly disappointing loss," said head coach Dean Koski. "To get an equalizer with two minutes left and then give up a go-ahead goal on the ensuing kickoff is very disappointing. I thought there was a lack of commitment today and our players need to decide how important it is to them to have success going forward."
Lehigh junior keeper Jacob Gottwald was forced to make two saves in the first five minutes. Lehigh's first shot came in the seventh minute on an attempt from senior Ben Davis that was stopped by Black Knights' keeper Chris Britt. The teams traded possession and shots throughout a majority of the opening half, but it wasn't until the 41st minute until either was able to get on the board when an Army West Point foul in the box led to a Luchini penalty kick. Luchini sent his shot to the right side of the net as Britt dove left to give the Mountain Hawks a 1-0 lead they would take into halftime.
The Black Knights were able to tie the game at one shortly into the second half when Nick Williams took a cross from Christian Clark and sent it past Gottwald in the 54th minute. Less than three minutes later, Gottwald stopped a Tanner Vosvick penalty kick, but Cody Guerry grabbed the rebound and sent it into the back of the net to put Army West Point ahead 2-1 in the 57th minute.
The Mountain Hawks began to pick up pace near the end of the half and were able to find an equalizer in the 88th minute. Luchini fired a free kick from the left side about 30 yards out and Greene was able to get a foot on it and send it past the diving keeper to even the score at 2-2.
The Black Knights answered back just 20 seconds later when Guerry connected on a pass from Trase Stapley to help Army West Point to a 3-2 victory.
Final shots stood at 19-13 in favor of Army West Point and Lehigh held a slim 6-5 corner kick edge. Britt made five saves compared to Gottwald's three.
Next up, the Mountain Hawks return home Saturday at 7 p.m. to host Loyola at the Ulrich Sports Complex.
