
Mountain Hawks rally for season-opening 4-3 win over Niagara

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh and Niagara went back-and-forth Saturday in the Mountain Hawks' season opener inside Lewis Tennis Center. The Mountain Hawks lost the doubles point but won the first three singles matches. Sophomore Ethan Bogard then broke a 3-3 tie with a straight set win at No. 6 singles to give Lehigh a 4-3 win over the visiting Purple Eagles.
Bogard defeated Francis Nadeau 6-2, 7-5 to close out the match after Lehigh's three most experienced players helped give Lehigh a 3-1 advantage.
Niagara won the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 flights. Bogard and classmate Tyler Hansen fell to Rares Ispas and Nadeau 6-3 at the No. 3 flight after senior Mitchell Petersen and freshman Jack Petersen dropped a 6-2 match to Mike Elortegui and Inaki Belloso.
Senior co-captain Ben Gilman earned Lehigh's first point at No.1 singles as Elortegui retired due to injury with Gilman up 6-4, 3-0. Mitchell Petersen, the other co-captain then defeated Belloso 6-2, 6-3 to put Lehigh up 2-1. Junior Jeremy Kochman made it three straight singles wins with a 6-2, 7-5 decision over David Raymond at No. 4 singles.
Niagara answered back with two straight victories to tie the team score. Jack Petersen dropped a three-set match to Olivier Dufour-Coursol at No. 2 singles, while Niagara's Ispas won in straight sets over sophomore Colin Nardella at the No. 5 flight.
Bogard's win clinched Lehigh's third consecutive season-opening win.
The Mountain Hawks will look to make it two straight victories when they host Monmouth Sunday at noon inside the Lewis Tennis Center.
