
Mountain Hawks come up short Saturday in the pool at Bucknell

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Lehigh men's swimming and diving team overcame a slow start by winning six of the final eight swimming events, but ultimately came up on the short end of a 174-119 score against Bucknell Saturday at Kinney Natatorium. Five individuals won one individual event for the Mountain Hawks, who were once again strong in the spring freestyle events. The loss drops Lehigh's men to 5-5 on the season with one meet remaining before the Patriot League Championships.

Sophomore Jamal Willis delivered Lehigh's first win of the day, capturing the 50 yard freestyle in 21.10 seconds. Freshman Zach Tieke stepped up in the 100 free, edging Erik Heinemann by .01 seconds to claim first place with a time of 47.68.

Reigning Patriot League Male Swimmer of the Week Jacob Moyar took third in the 200 free and second in the 200 fly before breaking through in the 500 free to win with a time 4:39.13.

Lehigh posted another close win in the 100 fly as junior Jake Hassel posted a time of 51.70 seconds to beat Tristan Loux by just .08.

With Bucknell in control of the meet, the Bison swam the last two events unscored, but Lehigh managed to post the top times in both events. Senior Jake Greene won the 200 IM with a time of 1:57.58. In the 400 free relay, Tieke, Hassel, Willis and sophomore Justin White won by .03 seconds with a time of 3:07.78.

Lehigh was forced to compete from behind from the get-go as Lehigh's top 200 medley relay team was disqualified and its B team could only muster a fourth place finish.

On the diving boards, senior Dan Bateman finished third in both the one and three meter events. Bateman scored 240.0 points in the one meter and 234.83 in the three meter.

The Mountain Hawks will host Drexel next Saturday in their final dual meet of the season with action set to begin at 1 p.m. from Jacobs Pool. Following the Drexel meet, Lehigh will shift focus to the league championship meet, February 18-21 at Bucknell's Kinney Natatorium.
