Lehigh hits the road for Thursday and Friday matches at Loyola and Navy

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh volleyball teams looks to stay hot and remain undefeated in Patriot League play Thursday and Friday when the Mountain Hawks head to Loyola and Navy. Both matches are set for 7 p.m. Lehigh's Thursday contest at Loyola will be broadcast free of charge on the Patriot League Network.
 
The Mountain Hawks are off to a 3-0 start to league play for the first time since 2002. Lehigh kicked off Patriot League play by winning its tenth-straight match over rival Lafayette, 3-1, before battling to a pair of 3-0 wins over Holy Cross and Army last weekend inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. The Mountain Hawks' straight-set win was the first 3-0 victory over Army since 2003 and just the second victory over the Black Knights in the last ten years. Lehigh heads into this weekend's matches with an 8-7 overall record.
 
Lehigh leads the Patriot League in a number of statistical categories, including opponent hitting percentage (.153), assists (11.92 per set), kills (12.92 per set) and digs (17.53 per set). The Mountain Hawks' digs per set average also ranks ninth-best in all of Division I. Sophomore libero Mariah Brantley leads the league and ranks 11th nationally in digs per set with a mark of 5.42. Junior Claire Bradshaw has recorded a league-best 0.44 service aces per set. Junior setter Amy Matula sits second in the Patriot League in assists per set with a mark of 9.57. Matula is just 229 assists away from entering the top five on Lehigh's career assists leaderboard.
 
Senior Jade Van Streepen leads Lehigh with 125 kills, but is followed closely by sophomore Morgan Lowe (114) and junior Stephanie Slater (112). Lowe led Lehigh with 35 kills through last week's three league wins while also averaging a double-double (11.67 kills per match, 10.33 digs per match). Slater hit an outstanding .419 while tallying a team-best 16 kills against Army as the Mountain Hawks grabbed the straight-set victory.
 
Thursday's match at Loyola will serve as the Greyhounds' Patriot League opener. Loyola carries a 2-11 record into the weekend and is coming off a straight-set win at Saint Francis (Pa.) last weekend. Loyola's only other win of the season came in the form of a 3-2 victory over Quinnipiac. Sophomore Jane Lukas leads Loyola with 123 kills, followed by senior Mindy Maloney with 105. Senior Lauren Anderson has tallied a team-best 365 assists while sophomore Micah Duzey leads the squad with 131 digs.
 
The Mountain Hawks will be looking for their seventh-straight win over the Greyhounds after Lehigh captured 3-0 and 3-1 wins in last year's contests. The Mountain Hawks hold an 8-3 all-time advantage over Loyola.
 
Navy enters Friday's matchup with a 4-6 overall mark and 1-0 Patriot League record. The Mids used strong finishes in each set to capture a 3-0 victory over Lafayette Friday night in Easton. Navy overcame an early deficit in the opening set to win 25-21 before cruising to 25-12 and 25-18 set two and three wins over the Leopards. The Mids hit .202 compared to Lafayette's .095.  
 
Junior Katie Sylakowski leads Navy with 94 kills and a .319 hitting percentage so far this season. Sylakowski has also posted a team-leading 26 total blocks. Junior Star Steele has tallied a team-best 273 assists, while sophomore Alli Graf leads the squad with 151 digs.
 
The home team came out on top 3-1 in both of last year's meetings between Lehigh and Navy. Senior Kaylynn Genemaras led the Mountain Hawks in Lehigh's 3-1 victory with 16 kills and a .433 hitting percentage, while junior Leah Turner followed with 11 kills and a .409 attacking percentage. Navy leads the all-time series 28-22.
 
Lehigh returns home to host Bucknell next Friday Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. in Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall before heading to Colgate on Saturday.
