Lehigh picks up straight-set win at Loyola to move to 4-0 in PL play

BALTIMORE – The Lehigh volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-20) win at Loyola Thursday night to remain undefeated in Patriot League play. The Mountain Hawks have now won six of their last seven matches to improve to 4-0 in the Patriot League and 9-7 overall. The victory also marks Lehigh's third-straight 3-0 win. Loyola falls to 2-12 with the loss.

"I thought we played really well on our side of the court and the girls took care of the ball which allowed us to volley well and play our game," said head coach Bob Bertucci. "Taking care of the ball was the most important thing for us and something we really focused on before the game. We had a very good offensive game from Jade Van Streepen which helped us at key points."

Senior Jade Van Streepen led Lehigh with nine kills and an impressive .474 hitting percentage. Junior Stephanie Slater, freshman Whitney Krantz and sophomore Morgan Lowe followed with seven kills apiece. Sophomore Mariah Brantley tallied a team-best 17 digs, while Lowe rounded out her strong performance with 15 digs. Junior Amy Matula led the team with 35 assists. The Mountain Hawks hit .231 as a team while limiting Loyola to .097.

The first set opened in a 4-4 tie before a kill from Van Streepen sparked a 4-0 Lehigh run and the Mountain Hawks took an 8-4 lead. Lehigh extended its lead to six at 11-5 with a spike from junior Ana Vrhel before the Greyhounds closed the gap to three at 11-8. A Lowe kill sparked a 7-1 Lehigh run as the Mountain Hawks grabbed an 18-9 advantage. The lead proved to be too much for the Greyhounds to overcome as another spike from Lowe eventually put Loyola away and the Mountain Hawks claimed a 25-16 set one win.

Kills from Van Streepen and Slater helped Lehigh to a 4-0 lead in the second set before the Mountain Hawks worked their advantage to five at 9-4. The Greyhounds responded with a 5-0 spurt sparked by a kill from Corri Walters to even the score at nine. After being tied at 13, the Mountain Hawks used a 4-1 run to reclaim the advantage at 17-14. Lehigh remained in control and Loyola was never able to get closer than two as the Mountain Hawks took a 25-20 set two victory and 2-0 match advantage.

A Matula service ace kicked off a 7-1 Lehigh run to start the third set. Loyola was never able to get within five points as the Mountain Hawks rolled to a 23-13 advantage. The Greyounds wouldn't go down without a fight, however, as they rallied to close the gap to four at 23-19. A kill from Van Streepen halted the 6-0 Loyola run. The Greyhounds got a point back on a Lehigh error before following with an error of their own to give the Mountain Hawks a 25-20 set three victory and 3-0 match win.

The Mountain Hawks return to action Friday at 7 p.m. at Navy. Lehigh looks to move to 5-0 in Patriot League play for the first time in program history.

"Navy is a very important road match," said Bertucci. "Statistically, we are in a dead heat with Navy in nearly every category.  It's going to be a very tough match and I anticipate it to be a knock-down drag-out kind of competition."
