BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Coming off a thrilling 2-1 overtime win over Towson, the Lehigh field hockey team heads to Washington, D.C. where it will open Patriot League play against American Saturday then face nonleague foe Georgetown on Sunday. Both games are set for 12 p.m. This past Sunday, sophomore Gabby Tofig scored both of Lehigh's goals including the game-winner in overtime to give the Mountain Hawks their first win of the season. The Mountain Hawks remained undefeated all-time against the Tigers and picked up their first overtime victory since Sept. 11, 2011, which was also Stacey Eversley's first win as Lehigh head coach.
Sophomore Julia Ward also starred against Towson, finishing with 11 saves which included a penalty stroke save just 18 seconds before Tofig sent the Mountain Hawks home winners. The win came over a Towson team that defeated #18 American just one day prior. Tofig and Ward were both recognized on the Patriot League Weekly Honor Roll with honorable mention recognition.
Tofig's two goals were a career high as she's up to three goals and six points on the season. Junior Lindsey Schott owns a team-leading eight points (three goals, two assists) while sophomore Amanda Granger also has a goal. Junior Steph Fratoni owns a team-leading two defensive saves while four others have one defensive stop each. Ward has a .720 save percentage in goal.
American is 4-2 on the season, falling to Richmond to open the season before defeating Old Dominion, Saint Joseph's, Michigan State and Drexel with the loss to Towson in between. Grace Wilson leads the Eagles in scoring with eight points (three goals, two assists) while Natalie Konerth has five (two goals, one assist) and Sophia Crawshay four (two goals). Kate McBeath has played every minute in goal, owning a 1.25 goals against average and .714 save percentage.
The Eagles lead the all-time series, 16-0. Lehigh hung tough with American last season, falling 2-0, the closest the Mountain Hawks had been since a 6-5 double overtime loss in 2006.
Georgetown enters the weekend with a 2-3 record and will also play on Saturday, hosting Longwood. The Hoyas have defeated Davidson and Holy Cross while falling to Appalachian State, Lock Haven and Brown. Aliyah Graves-Brown leads the offense with eight points (three goals, two assists) while Megan Parson has seven (three goals, one assist) and Emily Weinberg has four (two goals). Rachel Skonecki has started four of the five games so far, owning a 2.50 GAA and .724 save percentage.
Lehigh owns an 8-3 all-time record vs. Georgetown, winning two straight against the Hoyas. Last year, the Mountain Hawks won 4-0 at home, one year after winning 3-2 on the road.
Following this weekend, Lehigh will return home to host Patriot League foe Holy Cross next Saturday (Sept. 27) at 11 a.m.
