Lehigh drops league opener at American, 4-0

9/20/2014 2:09:00 PM | Field Hockey

WASHINGTON, D.C.  - After giving up two quick goals, the Lehigh field hockey team held American scoreless for the next 33:04, but the Mountain Hawks couldn't solve the Eagles defense, falling 4-0 in their Patriot League opener on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore goalie Julia Ward finished with five saves, including four in the second half, but it wasn't enough.

"American got off to a good start and we needed to capitalize on our opportunities," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Eversley. "Steph (Fratoni), Janelle (High), Jackie (Renda), Marissa (Glatt) and Kassidy (Green) played well, but we need more of a team effort to win."

The Eagles got on the board quickly just 1:48 into the game, turning the game's first penalty corner, and shot, into a 1-0 lead. Just under 10 minutes later, American used its second penalty corner, and shot, to take a 2-0 advantage.

Lehigh turned up the pressure as the first half progressed, tallying three shots in the final 10 minutes, including two penalty corners after the first-half time ran out. Senior Steph Fratoni had a shot blocked, forcing a second corner which led to a shot by sophomore Marissa Glatt and save by American goalie Kate McBeath to keep the score at 2-0 following 35 minutes of play.

American entered the second half on fire, finishing the stanza with a 12-0 shot advantage. Ward kept the Mountain Hawks in the game with her strong play, making four saves, but two got past her for the 4-0 final.

Final shots were 18-4 in favor of the Eagles while American held a 9-2 edge in penalty corners. Ward's five saves came across McBeath who had one.

The Mountain Hawks will return to action in just 24 hours as they remain in Washington D.C. to face the Georgetown Hoyas on Sunday at 12 p.m.
