Team effort leads Lehigh past Georgetown, 4-2

9/21/2014 3:25:00 PM | Field Hockey

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Behind an all-around team effort, the Lehigh field hockey team earned its second win in the last three games, beating Georgetown 4-2 on Sunday afternoon in our nation's capital. Four different Mountain Hawks scored goals as senior Natalie Tacka broke a 2-2 deadlock with her first goal of the season to put Lehigh up for good.

"I am very proud of our team and how they bounced back from yesterday to earn a good win," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Eversley. "The forwards were excellent and all around, the team effort and play was phenomenal. Natalie (Tacka), Gabby (Tofig), Erin (Ricker). Marissa (Glatt), Alex (Beatson) and Steph (Fratoni) played extremely well."

Georgetown got on the board first in the 16th minute as Emily Weinberg beat Lehigh sophomore goalie Julia Ward off a penalty corner to make it 1-0. The Mountain Hawks responded at 26:51 as junior Erin Ricker converted her first goal of the season, also off a corner, to tie the score at one heading into halftime.

It took just 2:13 of the second half for Lehigh to take its first lead as sophomore Gabby Tofig scored from the right side for her third goal over the last three games. The Hoyas answered just over two minutes later, but Tacka responded with her first goal of the season less than five minutes after that, off a penalty corner, to make it 3-2 Mountain Hawks at 44:28.

Junior Lindsey Schott converted a penalty stroke for an all-important insurance tally at 63:40 for a 4-2 lead, which stood as the final.

Final shots were 12-9 in favor of Lehigh while the Mountain Hawks held an 11-10 edge in penalty corners. Ward finished with three saves across Georgetown's Rachel Skonecki, who made two.

Lehigh returns home for a pair of games next weekend, hosting Patriot League foe Holy Cross on Saturday at 11 a.m. then welcoming Sacred Heart on Sunday at 1 p.m.
