Lehigh welcomes Holy Cross and Army this weekend

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Fresh off a league-opening 3-1 win at Lafayette, the Lehigh Volleyball team returns to the friendly confines of Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall Friday and Saturday to host Holy Cross and Army. The Mountain Hawks welcome the Crusaders at 7 p.m. Friday before taking on the Black Knights at 4 p.m. Saturday. Both matches will be broadcast free of charge on the Patriot League Network.
 
Lehigh kicked off Patriot League play Wednesday night with a 3-1 win at archrival Lafayette. The Mountain Hawks claimed the first two sets, 25-15 and 25-20, before the Leopards took the third set 25-23. Lehigh responded with a 25-22 set four win to capture the Mountain Hawks' tenth-straight victory over Lafayette. Sophomore Morgan Lowe recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 14 digs to lead Lehigh's attack. The Mountain Hawks head into this weekend's first match with a 1-0 league record and 6-7 overall mark.
 
The Mountain Hawks lead the Patriot League in a number of statistical categories including opponent hitting percentage (.117), assists (11.60 per set), kills (12.6 per set) and digs (17.3 per set). Lehigh's 17.3 digs per set average ranks 16th-best in all of Division I while sophomore Mariah Brantley's individual average of 5.28 leads the league and ranks 14th-best in the nation. Junior Amy Matula sits atop the Patriot League leaderboard in assists per set with an average of 9.29. Senior Jade Van Streepen leads the team with 109 kills while freshman Kelly Bennett has tallied a team-best 33 total blocks.
 
Holy Cross began the season 0-6 before winning two of its last three matches, including a big 3-1 victory over Army to begin league play to improve to 2-8 on the season. The win over Army was Holy Cross' first victory over the Black Knights since 2005. Mandy Sifferlen tallied a double-double with 16 kills and ten digs, while Katie McKernan also posted a double-double with 33 assists and 11 digs. The Crusaders also captured a 3-1 win over Binghamton to finish the Army Invitational with a 2-1 mark.
 
Sifferlen leads Holy Cross with 131 kills, followed by Emily Oliver with 96.  McKernan, the reigning Patriot League Player of the Week, has registered a team-best 181 assists, while Emily Popp leads the squad with 160 digs.
 
Lehigh captured a pair of 3-0 wins over Holy Cross last season and has won the last 12 matches against the Crusaders. The Mountain Hawks hold a 34-11 all-time advantage over Holy Cross.
 
Army enters this weekend with a 4-9 record and will play at Bucknell Friday night before heading to Lehigh Saturday. The Black Knights are coming off a 1-2 weekend at their home tournament, which was highlighted by a 3-1 win over Binghamton.  Nicole Perri leads Army with 130 kills, followed by Carolyn Bockrath with 123. Vanessa Edwards has recorded a team-best 444 assits, while Deanna Dalton leads the squad in digs with 126.
 
The teams split last season's meetings, but Lehigh emerged with a 3-2 win in the most recent matchup.  It marked the Mountain Hawks' first win over Army since 2003. Junior Ana Vrhel tallied a career-high 17 kills with just two errors to record a .469 hitting percentage and help Lehigh to the win. The Black Knights lead the all-time series 33-12.
 
Following this weekend's contests, Lehigh hits the road for matchups at Loyola and Navy next Thursday and Friday.
