EASTON, Pa. – The Lehigh volleyball team secured a 3-1 (25-15, 25-20, 23-25, 25-22) win at archrival Lafayette Wednesday evening to capture the Mountain Hawks' tenth-straight win over the Leopards and begin Patriot League play with a 1-0 record. Lehigh improves to 6-7 with the win while the Leopards fall to 3-9.
"We played well enough to win the game," said head coach Bob Bertucci. "We never really got our rhythm, but came out and won the first two games. I didn't feel like we played the way we're capable of playing. I give a lot of credit to Lafayette, but am happy we got the result tonight."
Sophomore Morgan Lowe recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 14 digs, while senior Kaylynn Genemaras tallied ten kills. Junior Amy Matula posted 34 assists and 14 digs, while sophomore Mariah Brantley registered a team-best 19 digs. Kills from Lowe and Vrhel, along with a service ace from junior Claire Bradshaw, got Lehigh out to a quick 3-0 start in the opening set before the Leopards battled back to tie the score. A 4-0 run pushed the Mountain Hawks ahead 7-3 and Lehigh eventually extended its lead to seven at 15-8. The Leopards closed the gap to four at 16-12, but a kill from freshman Whitney Krantz and several Lafayette attack errors helped Lehigh back to a seven-point advantage at 21-14. A spike from Genemaras capped off a 4-1 Lehigh run to close set one and give the Mountain Hawks a 25-15 victory.
The Leopards responded to take a 5-3 lead in the second set before three Lafayette errors and a kill from junior Stephanie Slater put Lehigh ahead 7-6. The Mountain Hawks held onto a slim one or two point lead until a kill from Elizabeth Walsh put the Leopards ahead at 15-14. Lehigh surged back with a 4-0 run comprised of a pair of service aces from sophomore Katie Jennison, a kill from Lowe and a block from Vrhel to reclaim the advantage at 18-15. The Mountain Hawks called a timeout with a 21-19 lead and followed the break with a 4-1 run to grab a 25-20 set two victory and 2-0 match lead.
The Leopards took an early lead in the third set once again before Lehigh used a 4-1 streak to take a 9-7 lead. Lafayette bounced back with a 7-1 run to go ahead 14-10 and force a Mountain Hawk timeout. The Leopards extended their advantage to 17-10 after the break before a block from sophomore Taylor Carroll and junior Leah Turner sparked a 5-1 Mountain Hawk run to pull Lehigh within three at 18-15 and force a Lafayette timeout. Kills from Turner and Lowe eventually helped the Mountain Hawks rally to tie the set at 22, but Lafayette eventually reached set point at 24-22. Turner put down a kill to give Lehigh one more point, but a Mountain Hawk error secured a 25-23 set three victory for the Leopards.
The fourth set began as a close battle, eventually sitting at 11-11 after five other knotted scores.
