BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Two Lehigh student-athletes were recognized by the Lehigh Valley Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Tuesday at the annual LVAIAW luncheon, which was held on the campus of DeSales University. Senior track and field standout Brooke Astor was recognized as Lehigh's top female athlete and also as the top track athlete among Lehigh Valley institutions. Sophomore Courtney Patterson was recognized as the Outstanding Athlete in swimming and diving.
Astor has won seven Patriot League titles in indoor and outdoor track and has twice been named the Patriot League Indoor Field Athlete of the Meet at the league championship meet. The senior owns five school records and has been the unquestioned leader of the Mountain Hawk squad. The Milltown, N.J. native helped lead Lehigh to a second-place finish at this season's indoor and outdoor championship meets, the highest finishes in program history.
Astor has also found success beyond the Patriot League. She competed against the best Division I athletes from the northeast in March to win the 2014 ECAC Pentathlon title. Recently, Astor broke her own school record in the outdoor heptathlon with an impressive 5,324 points competing against Olympians and professional athletes at the prestigious Mt. SAC relays in Walnut, Calif. Astor's decorated career helped her win Lehigh's Graduating Female Athlete of the Year award and the Mary O'Hurley Leadership award at the athletic department's end-of-year convocation last week.
Patterson was Lehigh's top scorer at the Patriot League Championships in February with 45 points. She won the first individual Patriot League title for the Lehigh women since 2003 with her gold medal effort in the 400 yard individual medley. A first team All-Patriot League selection, Patterson competed in five events at the Patriot League Championships, and set school records in all five.
In addition to her individual championship, Patterson finished eighth in the 500 yard freestyle and fifth in the 1650 yard freestyle and was a member of Lehigh's school record-setting 800 and 400 yard freestyle relay teams. The Cherry Hill, N.J. native is now a two-time All-Patriot League performer and was also named to the Academic All-Patriot League team.
