BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh track and field teams will send five Mountain Hawks to compete at the NCAA East Region Preliminaries on May 29-31 in Jacksonville, Fla. Senior Jimmy Miller and junior Ryan Mahalsky will represent the Lehigh men in distance events as they compete in the 5,000 meter and 10,000 meter runs, respectively. Junior Adeolu Adesida and freshman Courtney Avery will both compete in the high jump, while senior Jimil Ataman will represent Lehigh in the hammer throw at University of North Florida's Hodges Stadium.

The East Regional Preliminaries Championship features the top 48 qualifiers for events in both the men and the women's competition. The top 12 finishers in each event will join the top 12 finishers from the West Region to advance to the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 11-14 in Eugene, Ore.

Adesida won the high jump at both the indoor and outdoor Patriot League Championships and earned Lehigh's highest seed in the NCAA Preliminaries, ranking 21st in the event. The junior holds school records in both the indoor and outdoor event and turned in an outdoor season-high mark of 2.13m at the Coach Pollard Open on April 11. This will be Adesida's second appearance at the NCAA East Regional after making the trip last season. He finished 22nd a season ago and set a new school record with a leap of 2.14m. The men's high jump is set for 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Miller's qualifying time of 14:10.74 at Princeton's Larry Ellis Invitational set a personal best and puts him at No. 40 in the event. The 5,000 meter run will take place at 8:05 p.m. on Saturday. He finished third in the event at the Patriot League Championships in early May. Mahalsky takes on the 10,000 meter run at 9 p.m. on Thursday. He turned out a personal-best time of 29:39.33 at the Raleigh Relays in March, which puts him at 39th in the region heading into Thursday's competition. Mahalsky finished fourth in the event at the league championship meet. Senior Tyler Mueller also qualified to join the distance pair in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meter events, but will not be able to compete due to an injury suffered prior to Patriot League Championships.

Ataman will be making her second trip to the NCAA East Regional and will compete in the hammer throw which begins at 12 p.m. Thursday. The senior holds a No. 43 ranking heading into the competition after throwing a season-best 55.60m at the Swarthmore Final Qualifier on May 12. Ataman earned All-East distinction two weeks ago at the ECAC Championships and finished third in the hammer throw at the outdoor league championship meet. The Eagle, Idaho native finished 30th in the event at last season's NCAA East Regional.

Avery looks to cap off a stellar rookie campaign when the high jump gets underway at 5 p.m. Friday. The freshman holds both the indoor and outdoor school records, including her most recent mark of 1.76m that was set at the outdoor Patriot League Championship. She finished second in the event at the outdoor league championship meet after winning the title and being named Rookie of the Meet at the indoor championship. Avery earned All-East distinction at the outdoor ECAC Championships two weeks ago and has garnered a total of six Patriot League Rookie of the Week awards throughout the indoor and outdoor seasons. She ranks 44th in the region heading into Friday's competition.
