BOSTON – An eight run fifth inning doomed the Lehigh softball team Sunday in its series finale versus Boston University at the BU Softball Field. The Terriers erased an early 2-0 deficit with eight runs in the fifth and went on to defeat the Mountain Hawks 8-4. Jayme Mask and Emily Felbaum had two-run doubles in the fifth to lead the Terriers to the series win.
Boston University improves to 19-14 overall and 4-2 in the Patriot League, while Lehigh falls to 17-12 and 7-2 at the halfway point of league play.
Like in Saturday's second game, Lehigh went out to the early lead before BU battled back to win. Sophomore Jessica Calvini went 2-for-3 on Sunday, and gave Lehigh a 1-0 lead with a home run down the left field line in the second inning, her fourth of the season. In the third, Calvini singled up the middle to score classmate Alexis Watanabe, who reached on a fielder's choice and then stole second.
BU's eight run outburst began with a one out RBI single by Brittany Clendenny. Mask then doubled to left center, scoring two runs to give the Terriers a 3-2 lead. Mask then scored when Chelsea Kehr reached on an error.
Senior Ashley Quigley came on in relief of freshman Christine Campbell but gave up a single to opposing pitcher Lauren Hynes and an error by sophomore MacKenzie Velasquez allowed another run to score. A Mandy Fernandez RBI double made the score 6-2 in favor of Boston University before Felbaum capped the frame with a two-run double to center.
Lehigh had baserunners in every inning but left nine runners on for the game. The Mountain Hawks did add two runs in the seventh as sophomore Carissa Zito drew a one out walk and junior Cassie Waggy followed with a two-run homer to left, her third of the season.
Campbell suffered the loss in the pitcher's circle for Lehigh allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits in 4.1 innings. She struck out three and walked one as she falls to 7-4 on the season. Quigley allowed three runs, but just one earned, on four hits in her 1.2 innings of work.
Hynes threw all 21 innings in the circle for BU this weekend. On Sunday, she allowed four runs on nine hits and struck out four, while also issuing three walks. Hynes is now 12-10 on the season.
The Mountain Hawks will return home for three midweek non-league games before returning to league play with three games at Bucknell next weekend. On Tuesday Lehigh will host Marist for a doubleheader with first pitch for game one set for 3 p.m. from Kaufman Field. Lehigh will also host Fordham in a single game at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Kaufman Field.
