BOSTON – In her first appearance in two weeks, junior Emily Bausher fired a one-hit shutout to lead the Lehigh softball team to a 3-0 win over Boston University in the first game of a doubleheader at the BU Softball Field. Lehigh's 13-game win streak came to an end in the nightcap as the Terriers erased a 2-1 deficit with three unearned runs in the fifth and went on to win 6-4.
With the split, Lehigh is now 17-11 overall and 7-1 in the Patriot League, while Boston University moves to 18-14, 3-2.
Game one saw Lehigh and BU combine for seven errors but Bausher worked around Mountain Hawk errors to throw her first shutout of the season. Bausher threw five no-hit innings, working out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the fifth after a force out at home and a ground out to second base. Brittany Clendenny broke up the no-hit bid with a single through the left side to lead off the sixth, but Bausher retired the final six batters of the game.
Bausher struck out seven and walked one to improve to 4-5 on the season.
Lehigh got all of its offense in game one in the top of the fifth, scoring three runs on four hits. Freshman Vicky Lattanzio led off with a double to center and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. After a hit batter, junior Cassie Waggy singled through the left side to score pinch runner Lizzy Odren to give the Mountain Hawks a 1-0 lead. Three batters later, sophomore MacKenzie Velasquez singled to right, plating two more runs to give Lehigh its 3-0 lead.
Lauren Hynes took the loss for BU, allowing three runs on seven hits in a complete game effort. She walked one and struck out two.
Sophomore Alexis Watanabe had two of Lehigh's seven hits in the opener.
Lehigh started fast in game two, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning on RBI singles by sophomore Jessica Calvini and Waggy.
Hynes helped her own cause in the bottom of the first with a two-out, RBI double to left that scored Chelsea Kehr.
The Terriers took advantage of an error by freshman Ashley Cole to take the lead in the bottom of the fifth. The error allowed Clendenny to open the inning by reaching second base. Senior Ashley Quigley recorded the next two outs, but after an intentional walk to Hynes, Mandy Fernandez tied the game with a single to left. Amy Ekart then followed with a two-run double to give BU a 4-2 lead after five.
The Mountain Hawks threatened in the sixth, loading the bases with one out, but Hynes got Cole to ground into a force play at the plate and then got Velasquez to ground out to short to end the frame.
Boston University extended its lead in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI single by Jayme Mask and a double by Kehr.
Calvini brought Lehigh back within two in the seventh with a two-run home run to left center, her third of the season. Waggy was hit by a pitch to bring sophomore Emma Capetz to the plate as the tying run, but Capetz flew out to center to end the game as the Terriers handed Lehigh its first league loss.
Quigley allowed six runs (three earned) on ten hits as she falls to 6-3 on the season. She struck out five and walked four in the nightcap. Hynes improved to 11-10 allowing four runs (three earned) on ten hits. She struck out one and walked two.
Waggy went 3-for-3 in the nightcap, while Calvini went 2-for-4 and drove in three of Lehigh's four runs.
Lehigh and Boston University will wrap-up their series with a single game Sunday at noon from the BU Softball Field.
