BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's golf team hosts the second annual Patriot League Championship this weekend on the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club. Last year marked the inaugural Patriot League Championship for women's golf with the Mountain Hawks taking home first place by three strokes over Bucknell at the Bucknell Golf Course.
The tournament moves to Bethlehem for its second year. The two-day tournament features 36 holes Saturday beginning at 8:30 a.m. followed by 18 holes Sunday with an 8:30 a.m. start. The Grace Course, home to the Lehigh Fall Invitational and last year's Patriot League Men's Championship is a par 72 that will play at 5,990 yards this weekend.
The championship field expands to five teams this year with the addition of Boston University to the Patriot League. This year's field features Lehigh, Bucknell and Boston University plus Navy and Holy Cross. Boston University and Lehigh tied for first place in the women's golf preseason poll with Bucknell close behind. Navy was picked fourth followed by Holy Cross in fifth.
The Mountain Hawks are coming off of their second tournament win of the season earlier this week at the rain-shortened Red Flash Invitational with a 36-hole score of 327-303-630. Lehigh also won the spring-opening Warner University Invitational in Florida over spring break.
In four tournaments this spring, Lehigh had three different individuals post top finishes. Junior Kelly Moylan led the Mountain Hawks both in Florida and at the Hoya Invitational, while classmate Alyssa Scheyd led Lehigh at the Red Flash Invitational, tying for fourth after recording a hole in one in Monday's first round en route to a 72. Sophomore Nicole Feierberg led Lehigh at the Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate with a 19th place finish.
Lehigh returns a pair of All-Patriot League performers from last year's championship as Moylan and senior Crystal Lee tied for sixth a year ago in Lewisburg. Feierberg also brought home hardware as she finished eighth to earn Rookie of the Year honors.
Six golfers from each school will compete for each team, with the low four scores in each round used for team scoring. Lehigh's six scoring players include Lee, Moylan, Scheyd and Feierberg, plus junior Melanie Dickens and freshman Elizabeth McGarrigle.
This weekend's individual champion will be named the Patriot League Women's Golfer of the Year (there will be a playoff if there is a tie for the individual title), while the highest finishing freshman receives the Rookie of the Year honor. Coaches will select one of their peers as the Patriot League Coach of the Year.
There will also be a 10-member All-Patriot League Team based on finish at the championship. The top five finishers (including ties) make the first-team squad, and all remaining finishers up to 10th place (including ties) qualify for the second-team.
Live scoring for the Patriot League Championship will be available here.
