BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Last year, the women's golf team held off Bucknell by three strokes to win the inaugural Patriot League Championship on the Bison's home course. Another tight battle is on in 2014 as the Bison lead the Mountain Hawks by one stroke after 36 holes Saturday on the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club.
The Mountain Hawks shot 311 in the morning compared to 313 for the Bison, but Bucknell answered with a 306 in the afternoon compared to Lehigh's 309. Entering the final 18 holes Sunday, Bucknell leads at 619, while Lehigh is one back at 620. Boston University sits in third place at 631, while Navy is fourth at 676 and Holy Cross fifth at 779.
"The course was beautiful and we had good weather today," Lehigh head coach Judy Dwyer said. "It's really amazing what the folks at Saucon Valley did in the last several weeks to get this course back into what we know it. It's a different course than what we're used to. There were about seven holes that were dramatically changed and yet we hung in there. It's a tight race but we're hoping to finish strong and come back with the trophy again."
Lehigh senior Crystal Lee holds the 36-hole overall lead at four over par 148. Lee's 75 was the lowest round of the morning and her 73 in the afternoon matched the lowest of the day. She missed a short birdie putt on the ninth hole, her final hole of the day, that would have given the senior a round of even par 72.
Junior Kelly Moylan is Lehigh's second lowest player for the championship at 14 over par 158. Moylan shot 80 in the morning and 78 in the afternoon and is tied for fifth place.
Lehigh's second-lowest round in the morning came from junior Alyssa Scheyd, who shot 77. After an 83 in the afternoon Scheyd is tied for ninth at 160.
Also competing for the Mountain Hawks were sophomore Nicole Feierberg, who shot 79-83-162 and is tied for 11th and junior Melanie Dickens who is tied for 13th at 84-80-164.
Freshman Lizzie McGarrigle rebounded from an opening round 90 to shoot 78 in the afternoon. She is tied for 18th at 168.
Individually, Lee holds a two stroke lead over Boston University's Kristyna Pavlickova (76-74-150). Bucknell's Bridget Wilcox and Lauren Bernard are in third and fourth place and are within four strokes of the lead.
The Patriot League Championship concludes Sunday with the final 18 holes, beginning at 8:30 a.m. from Saucon Valley Country Club.
