BOSTON – The Lehigh track and field teams rounded out their indoor seasons with impressive performances at the ECAC/IC4A Championships at Boston University Saturday and Sunday. The Mountain Hawks competed against the best of the best from Division I schools in the northeast during the meet. After senior Brooke Astor's record-setting pentathlon win on Friday, the meet was highlighted by another record-setting performance from senior Jimmy Miller and four Mountain Hawks finishing in the top eight of their events to be named All-East.
"Between the two programs, we had a champion and four All-East people so that caps off an outstanding indoor season," said head coach Matt Utesch. "I'm very proud of both programs and this sets a great tone heading into the outdoor season."
Miller represented Lehigh in the 3000 meter run Sunday and finished the race in a blistering 8:10.99 to set a new school record. The senior bested the previous record of 8:15.41 that was set by Ed Kehoe in 1985. Miller's time was good for 15th place.
"Jimmy sure is back and he's running better than ever," said Utesch. "He started to show that during the Patriot League Championships and I fully expect him to carry it through to the outdoor season. He, Mahalsky and Mueller will be a huge force to be reckoned with in the outdoor distance events."
Junior Ryan Mahalsky continued Lehigh's successful performance in the distance events, placing fifth in the 5000 meter run Saturday with a new personal-best time of 14:13.87. Mahalsky bested his previous personal record of 14:21.50 by eight seconds and was just one second short of a new Lehigh record. His fifth-place finish earned him All-East distinction.
Junior Adeolu Adesida finished seventh in the high jump with a leap of 2.09m to earn All-East honors on Saturday.
For the women, Freshman Courtney Avery finished her impressive rookie campaign with a 1.68m leap in the high jump to finish tied for fourth place. Her finish earned her All-East honors.
Senior Martin Otieno qualified for the 200 meter dash finals and placed ninth with a time of 21.82. He also finished 20th in the 60 meter dash prelims with a mark of 7.11 seconds.
Junior Chirstopher Watson placed 25th in the 800 meter prelims, clocking in at 1:54.10. Classmate Justin Mahoney sprinted 400 meters in 49.92 to place 30th in the prelims. Junior Simon Voorhees finished the 1000 meter run in 2:32.28 to place 19th in the prelims.
The team of Voorhees, Nicholas Molloy, John Caivardelli and Mitchell Biler ran the 4x800 meter relay in 7:44.60 to place 13th. Otieno, Mahoney, Watson and Christopher Del Rossi finished the 4x400 meter relay in 3:17.42 to grab 14th place.
Sophomore Elizabeth Weiler placed 21st in the 5000 meter run prelims with a new personal-best clip of 17:21.60. Junior Ingrid Simon ran the 1000 meter race in 2:59.60 to finish 24th in the event prelims.
Simon joined Victoria Mullane, Amanda Ruschel and Marissa Karl in the 4x800 meter relay as the group placed 14th in the prelims with a mark of 9:22.64.
The Mountain Hawks will now have two weeks off competition before opening the outdoor season at the Philadelphia Classic on March 22.
