BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team completed a three-game sweep of arch rival Lafayette with a pair of victories Monday at Kaufman Field. Senior Ashley Quigley set a career-high with 12 strikeouts as Lehigh took the opener 4-1, while the Mountain Hawk bats pounded out 12 hits in a 9-1, six inning win in the nightcap.
Sophomore Morgan Decker went 4-for-4 in the doubleheader with a two doubles, a triple, three runs scored, two RBI and three walks to lead the Mountain Hawks, who extended their winning streak to ten straight. Lehigh is now 14-10 overall and 6-0 in the Patriot League, while Lafayette is 2-16 and 1-5 in league play.
"We were not taking anything for granted," said Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan. "Lafayette came over here with the intent of winning. The first game could have went either way, it was a very tight game. Fortunately we came through in that one. In the second game our bats came alive a little bit and we opened things up."
Quigley's pitching was the story in game one as she went the distance on a three-hitter for her fifth win of the season. The senior right-hander from Arizona struck out the first eight batters she faced, including four batters in the second inning when Allison Brown struck out swinging and reached on a passed ball.
Decker gave Lehigh a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when she singled home classmate MacKenzie Velasquez who reached on an error in the bottom of the first.
Lafayette pulled even in the third once the Leopards began putting the ball in play. After Quigley's eighth strikeout, Kelly Lallis grounded out to second base. Kristen Berger then drew a two-out walk and Bryn Gornick followed with a RBI double to center that scored Berger to tie the game at 1-1.
The Leopards nearly took the lead in the fifth on another two out walk to Berger. Gornick and Kristyn Marinelli followed with singles but Velasquez threw out Berger at the plate to keep the game tied.
The Mountain Hawks regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Lehigh loaded the bases with one out and sophomore Cassie Waggy hit a ground ball to third that Stephanie Schreiber bobbled, allowing Velasquez to score. Sophomore Jessica Calvini followed with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring classmate Alexis Watanabe to put Lehigh up 3-1. Lehigh added a run in the sixth when senior Lizzy Odren scored on a wild pitch.
Quigley finished strong after the Leopards nearly took the lead in the fifth as she retired the final six batters she faced. Three of those outs were via strikeout, including a punch-out of Lallis for her 12th to end the game. Quigley's previous career high of 11 was set against Manhattan in 2011. She improves to 5-2 after allowing the run on three hits and walking three in a complete game effort.
Marinelli suffered the loss for Lafayette allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits. Freshman Vicky Lattanzio had two of Lehigh's six hits in the opener.
The Mountain Hawks got their offense going in game two with 12 hits, including three triples. Lattanzio led off the bottom of the second with a triple down the right field line and scored Lehigh's first run on a single to left by sophomore Emma Capetz. Calvini then drove home Capetz with a double to right center. Two batters later, freshman Ashley Cole singled through the left side, giving Lehigh a 3-0 lead after two innings.
Lafayette scored its only run of game two on doubles by Berger and Marinelli in the top of the third but Lehigh answered in the bottom of the frame as Decker led off with a triple to right and pinch runner Odren scored on a ground out by Capetz.
Lehigh broke the game open in the fourth as the Mountain Hawks turned three Lafayette errors into four runs to go up 8-1. Cole led off the inning with a rocket off the glove of Schreiber, who then threw the ball down the right field line allowing Cole to advance all the way to third. Velasquez then reached on a fielder's choice with Cole beating the throw home. Velasquez then took off for a vacated second base and Berger couldn't handle the throw from catcher Jenna Kulback allowing Velasquez to take third. An errant pickoff throw by Kulback allowed Velasquez to score to make it 6-1 Lehigh. Watanabe then walked and scored on a double down the right field line by Decker. A single to right by Waggy scored Decker to put Lehigh up by seven.
Calvini led off the fifth with Lehigh's third triple of the game, but the Mountain Hawks could not bring her home. Decker picked up her third hit of the game with a one-out double in the sixth, and scored the game-ending run on a single up the middle by Waggy.
Freshman Christine Campbell battled through six innings to pick up her second win of the weekend and sixth of the season. Campbell allowed a run on five hits while striking out five and walking three as she improves to 6-3. Melissa Robinson went the first three-plus innings for Lafayette, allowing eight runs (five earned) on nine hits.
Decker, Waggy, Calvini and Cole combined for nine of Lehigh's 12 hits.
"Christine really did a great job and kept them off balance a little bit," Troyan said. "The strike zone was a little inconsistent but she battled through it. Ashley just pitched a great game for us."
The Mountain Hawks will take to the road for their next five games, beginning with a Wednesday doubleheader at Rider. First pitch for game one is set for 3 p.m. from Lawrenceville, N.J.
