The Rivalry: Lehigh vs. Lafayette

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Freshman Christine Campbell fired a two-hit shutout and sophomore Morgan Decker belted her fourth home run of the season to lead the Lehigh softball team to a 4-0 victory over rival Lafayette in the opening game of a three-game series Saturday at Kaufman Field. Saturday's second game of a schedule doubleheader was postponed due to rain as the Mountain Hawks and Leopards will now try to complete their series with a doubleheader on Sunday.

With the win Lehigh improves to 12-10 overall and 4-0 in the Patriot League. The Mountain Hawks have now won eight straight games overall. Lafayette is now 2-14 overall and 1-3 in the league following the loss.

"Christine did a great job," said Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan. "Last time out against Colgate she didn't pitch as well as she had been pitching and she came out very focused today with a two-hit shutout. We made a couple mistakes behind her but she kept her composure. Overall, we played exceptionally well."

Campbell and Lafayette starter Melissa Robinson matched zeroes early on, with Campbell retiring 15 of the first 16 batters she faced, while Robinson worked out of trouble in each of the first three innings as the Mountain Hawks left six runners on base.

Lehigh finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth as sophomore MacKenzie Velasquez led off with a single up the middle off Robinson's glove and then two batters later Decker drilled a home run to right center, her fourth of the season, to give the Mountain Hawks a 2-0 lead.

"Any time we have someone in scoring position and Morgan is up we feel like she has a great chance of knocking in some runs," Troyan said.

In the sixth, Lehigh added to its lead with two more runs as freshman Vicky Lattanzio doubled home senior Emma Capetz, who led off with a single. A ground out moved pinch runner Kristin Taft to third base and Taft came in to score Lehigh's fourth run on a wild pitch.

Campbell opened the contest with five no-hit innings as Lafayette's only base runner came in the top of the third when Stephanie Schreiber reached on a Decker throwing error.

The Leopards broke up the no-hit bid when Jenna Kulback singled through the left side to open the sixth. Kulback moved to third base following a passed ball and a ground out, but Campbell got Kristen Berger to line into a 6-5 double play to end the threat.

Lafayette tried to rally in the seventh as Allison Brown led off with a pinch hit single and Bryn Gornick reached on an error but Campbell retired Jenna Orlando on a comebacker to close out her third shutout of the season.

Campbell improves to 5-3 on the season after allowing just those two hits. She struck out three and did not walk a batter. Robinson took the loss for Lafayette allowing four runs on nine hits. She walked two and did not record a strikeout. Velasquez had three of Lehigh's nine hits against Robinson, while Lattanzio added two as well.

The Mountain Hawks and Leopards will try to close out their series with a Sunday doubleheader with first pitch scheduled for noon. Streaming audio of both games will be available at Lehighsports.com.
