BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh track and field teams will begin the outdoor season Saturday at the Philadelphia College Classic. The Mountain Hawks will compete in the all-day event at Penn's Franklin Field to kick off a string of six straight weekends on the road. Field events are set to begin at 12 p.m., while running events start at 1 p.m.
Both teams will look to build upon their successful indoor seasons. The women captured their best-ever finish at the indoor Patriot League Championships as the Mountain Hawks placed second, while the men finished fifth at the league championship meet.
The women will be led by senior Brooke Astor who is coming off another impressive season. Astor claimed the pentathlon title at the ECAC Championships on March 7 while setting a new school record. The Milltown, N.J. native captured her third straight league title in the indoor pentathlon at the league championship meet one month ago to collect her second Field Athlete of the Meet honor. During the 2013 outdoor season, Astor claimed Patriot League titles in both the heptathlon and 100 meter hurdles.
Freshman Courtney Avery will be looking to continue her impressive rookie campaign. Avery was named Rookie of the Meet at the indoor Patriot League Championship event after winning the high jump with a school-record leap of 1.75m. Avery finished tied for fourth in the event at ECAC championships to earn All-East honors.
Seniors Danielle Albergo and Jessica Kendzor each captured titles at the indoor league championship meet, in the 500 and 800 meter runs, respectively. The team of Kendzor, junior Ingrid Simon, classmate Victoria Mullane and freshman Amanda Ruschel won the 4x800 meter relay.
The men will be led by a strong distance trio of seniors Tyler Mueller and Jimmy Miller, along with junior Ryan Mahalsky. Mueller won both the 3,000 and 5,000 meter races at the indoor championships and holds school records in both the indoor 5,000 meter and outdoor 10,000 meter. Miller broke a 29-year old Lehigh record in the 3,000 mete run at IC4A championships just two weeks ago. Mahalsky was named All-East after finishing fifth in the 5,000 meter at IC4As.
Junior Adeolu Adesida picked up a league title in the high jump at the league championship meet and looks to build upon his successful junior campaign. The Princeton, N.J. native holds the school record (2.18m) in the event, as well. Classmate Derek Gaul will lead the Mountain Hawks in the long jump after finishing second in the event at the indoor league championship meet.
Senior Martin Otieno leads a talented group of sprinters. Otieno finished second in the 200 meter dash at the indoor championship meet. He will be joined by juniors Justin Mahoney and Christopher Watson.
This season's outdoor Patriot League Championship meet will take place at Navy on May 2-3.
Following Saturday's meet, the Mountain Hawks will head to the Winthrop Invite and Lafayette Seven Way next weekend. A full schedule of Saturday's events is listed below.
