Mountain Hawk men finish fifth at Patriot League Championships

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Lehigh men's track and field team finished fifth at the indoor Patriot League Championship meet Sunday inside Bucknell's Gerhard Field House. The Mountain Hawks finished the three-day meet with three individual event titles. Lehigh won the high jump and 5000 meter run Saturday before claiming the 3000 meter run on the final day of competition.
"We put everything we had on the track today and they did a phenomenal job," said head coach Matt Utesch. "We scratched and clawed for every point that we earned and I'm super proud of our guys. It was a true team effort."
Navy won the team crown with 201.83 points, followed by Bucknell (173), Army (135.33) and Boston University (109). Lehigh rounded out the top five with 105.50 points.
With a 5000 meter run victory already under his belt, senior Tyler Mueller picked up his second victory in the 3000 meter run with an IC4A qualifying and new personal-best time of 8:17.75. Junior Ryan Mahalsky placed in fourth with another personal best and IC4A qualifying mark, 8:21.72, as the two men combined to give Lehigh 15 team points.
Senior Martin Otieno picked up a pair of IC4A qualifying marks with his second-place finish in the 200 meter dash (21.91) and fifth-place finish in the 60 meter dash (6.95).
Junior Christopher Watson placed fifth in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:54.82, while classmate Mitchell Biler finished seventh in 1:56.23. Junior Justin Mahoney placed seventh in the 400 meter run with a clip of 49.67. Junior Simon Voorhees ran 1000 meters in a new personal-best time of 2:30.48 to claim eighth place.
Mahoney, Otieno, Watson and Chirstopher Del Rossi finished fourth in the 4x400 meter relay with an IC4A qualifying time of 3:19.41. The team of Voorhees, John Ciavardelli, Kenneth Wilkinson and Nicholas Molloy took sixth in the distance medley relay with a time of 10:21.84.
Freshman Lucas Warning placed eighth in the shot put with a launch of 15.36m that crushed his previous personal record of 14.71m.
Next, those that have qualified from the Mountain Hawks' squad will compete at the IC4A Championships in Boston for a chance to advance to the NCAA Indoor Championships. The IC4As will be held March 7-9.
