| Inside the Rivalry: Lehigh vs. Lafayette

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – A trio of Lehigh women's basketball players scored 16 points apiece to help the Mountain Hawks rout rival Lafayette 73-59 on Senior Night Saturday inside Stabler Arena. The contest was tied at 54 before the Mountain Hawks closed the game on a 19-5 run to capture Lehigh's eighth-straight home win over Lafayette.

"A win is always a good thing right now, but it was a really special night for our seniors to get a win over Lafayette," said head coach Sue Troyan. "The team responded really well tonight. They played with a lot of confidence, shot the ball well and defended well, too."

The win snapped Lehigh's three-game losing streak and gave Lehigh its sixth-straight win on Senior Night as seniors Alexandra Yantzi, Hilary Weaver and Lindsay Hoskins were honored with a pregame ceremony. The Mountain Hawks improve to 12-14 overall and 5-10 in the Patriot League, while the Leopards fall to 13-14 overall and 7-9 in the league.

"This game is always bigger than the team," said Troyan. "It says something about the underclassmen and it says something about how much the seniors have meant to the program."

Juniors Sarah Williams and Katie O'Reilly as well as sophomore Kerry Kinek each scored 16 points. Kinek also recorded a team-leading 11 rebounds to secure her third double-double of the season. Williams dished a team-leading five assists.

The Mountain Hawks finished the game shooting 42.3 percent (30-for-71) from the field compared to Lafayette's 32.4 percentage (23-for-71). Lehigh held the Leopards to just 23.1 percent (9-for-39) in the second half. Lehigh connected on 11 of its 13 free throw attempts, while Lafayette shot 62.5 percent (10-for-16) from the charity stripe. Lehigh held a 50-45 rebound advantage and forced 15 Lafayette turnovers compared to its own 14.

Lehigh made its first two shots while also forcing three Leopard turnovers to begin the game with a 4-0 lead before a jumper from Lafayette's Madeline Fahan put the Leopards on the board with 17:21 on the clock. The Leopards followed with a three-pointer two minutes later to claim a 5-4 lead.

Lafayette held onto the lead until the clock read 10:44 when Lehigh tied the game at 14 thanks to a layup from freshman Lexi Martins. Following a jumper from Williams, the Mountain Hawks took a 16-15 lead but the Leopards answered back with a 8-0 run to take back the lead, 23-16, with 6:36 left in the half.

Down by five with 2:10 on the clock, Lehigh used four points from O'Reilly and a three-pointer from Kinek to tie the game once again at 31. The Leopards scored the next four points, but a last-second layup from junior Williams sent Lehigh into the locker room down by two at 35-33.

Lafayette started the second half on a 5-2 run, but a pair of jumpers from Williams and Yantzi put Lehigh back within one at 40-39. Lafayette used four straight points to extend its lead before Lehigh tossed in five straight, including a three-pointer from freshman Kayla Burton, to reclaim the advantage, 46-44, with 13:26 on the clock.

The lead changed hands six times over the next seven minutes until a jumper from O'Reilly sparked a 13-2 Mountain Hawk run that included four points from O'Reilly, Williams and freshman Kiernan McCloskey as the Mountain Hawks took a 67-56 lead with 2:48 on the clock. Lehigh held Lafayette scoreless for over three minutes during the game-winning stretch.

Lafayette was only able to score three more points for the rest of the contest, as the Leopards had no chance but to send the Mountain Hawks to the foul line where Lehigh converted 4-of-4 free throws for the 73-59 win.

Lehigh now faces a quick turnaround as the Mountain Hawks host Army Monday night at 7 p.m. in a rescheduled game. Lehigh will then host Bucknell Wednesday at 7 p.m.
