Petersens lead the way as Lehigh hosts Fall Invitational

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's tennis team hosted its first of two fall events this weekend as the Mountain Hawks welcomed Monmouth, Temple and Stevens Tech for the Lehigh Fall Invitational, which wrapped-up Sunday on the Ulrich Varsity Courts. The Mountain Hawks squared off against all three teams in singles and doubles action with strong results.
Leading the way for the Mountain Hawks were the two Petersens, senior Mitchell and freshman Jack, who both went 3-0 in singles play and teamed to go 3-0 at No. 2 doubles.
Lehigh began the weekend by taking on Temple Saturday inside the Lewis Tennis Center. The Mountain Hawks and Owls split four doubles matches, with senior Ben Gilman and junior Jeremy Kochman winning at the top flight against Hicham Belkssir and Nicolas Paulas and the Petersens defeating Hernan Vasconez and Stephen Ong.
In singles play, Lehigh won six of the eight matches against the Owls. In addition to the Petersens, sophomores Colin Nardella and Tyler Hansen posted straight set wins. Kochman prevailed in three sets against Santiago Canete, while sophomore Ethan Bogard won at the sixth flight when Filip Stipcic retired.
On Sunday, the Mountain Hawks battled a shorthanded Monmouth squad that only brought four players. Petersen and Petersen won at second doubles, while Hansen and Graham Lehman won over a mixed team of players from Temple and Stevens Tech. Lehigh went 4-1 in singles, with Gilman, Jack Petersen and Kochman winning against Monmouth opponents and Mitchell Petersen defeating Anutej Yadiki of Temple.
Lehigh closed out the weekend against Stevens Tech, winning three of four doubles matches and sweeping seven singles matches.
In addition to Lehigh's three matches, several Mountain Hawks filled in open spots for Monmouth in its matches. Sophomore Jason Sutker and Lehman posted a win in doubles against Stevens Tech but both players dropped singles matches. Junior Ricardo Prince picked up a win in singles during Monmouth's match against Temple, defeating Yadiki.
Several Mountain Hawks will next compete at the ITA Regionals hosted by St. John's October 16-18 before Lehigh closes out the fall when it hosts the Patriot League Kickoff October 24-26.
