Lehigh travels to Army and Holy Cross for key road matches this weekend

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh volleyball team faces a tough test this weekend when the Mountain Hawks travel to Army and Holy Cross for important Patriot League contests. Lehigh heads to Army Friday at 7 p.m. before traveling to Holy Cross Saturday at 4 p.m. as the Mountain Hawks look to improve upon their 7-2 Patriot League record.
Lehigh carries a 14-9 overall mark, including the 7-2 league record, into this weekend's contests and the Mountain Hawks currently sit in second place in the Patriot League. Lehigh will be looking to keep up with red-hot American, who holds down first place with a perfect 9-0 mark, and gain ground on third-place Colgate (6-3). The Mountain Hawks are coming off a pair of 3-0 wins a week ago as Lehigh toppled rival Lafayette Friday before taking down NJIT on Saturday. Lehigh holds a 6-3 away game record this season.
The Mountain Hawks lead the league in assists per set (11.76) and digs per set (16.81), and also rank second in the league in a number of statistical categories. Sophomore Mariah Brantley holds a league-leading 5.40 digs per set average that ranks 11th-best in all of Division I. Junior Amy Matula ranks second in the league in assists per set (9.48), while classmate Claire Bradshaw's 0.41 service aces per set average also sits in second place. Senior Jade Van Streepen continues to anchor Lehigh offensively with 187 kills, while junior Stephanie Slater (179) and sophomore Morgan Lowe (172) have also been key contributors.
Fifth-place Army enters Friday's match with a 5-4 conference record and a 10-12 overall record. The Black Knights are currently on a three-game winning streak that includes two wins against Patriot League rivals Holy Cross (3-1) and Lafayette (3-2). Army holds a .213 hitting percentage compared to its opponents' .216 average. Nicole Perri leads the Black Knights in kills with 243, followed by freshmen Amber Clay (201) and Carolyn Bockrath (196). Bockrath's hitting percentage of .378 is the second highest in the league. Setter Vanessa Edwards' 9.97 assists per set average also leads the Patriot League.
The Mountain Hawks defeated Army 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 30-28) in the season's first meeting on Sept. 20 inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. The straight-set win marked Lehigh's first 3-0 win over Army since Nov. 8, 2003. Slater led Lehigh with 16 kills and an outstanding .419 hitting percentage. Lowe followed with 14 kills and a .355 attacking percentage. Matula registered a double-double with 42 assists and 10 digs, while Brantley led the team with 20 digs. Junior Ana Vrhel posted three total blocks. Lehigh hit.315 as a team compared to Army's .256 percentage. Perri led the way for Army with 15 kills, while Clay followed with 14.
Holy Cross enters this weekend with a 4-5 Patriot league record and 5-14 overall mark as the Crusaders sit in sixth place in the Patriot League. The Crusaders dropped their last two Patriot League matchups against Navy (3-0) and Army (3-1) and will face off against Bucknell on Friday before hosting Lehigh saturday. Holy Cross is hitting just .145 as a team, while its opponents average a .216 hitting percentage. Mandy Sifferlen leads the squad with 211 kills, followed by Emily Oliver with 164. Setter Katie McKernan has tallied a team-best 424 assists, but also ranks third on the team in kills with 110.
The Mountain Hawks picked up a straight-set win over Holy Cross in the season's first meeting on Sept. 19 in Bethlehem. A pair of 25-14 set wins followed by a tight 26-24 set three victory helped Lehigh capture its 13th straight win over the Crusaders and third-consecutive 3-0 win. Van Streepen and Lowe led the Mountain Hawks with seven kills apiece, followed by Slater with five. Sophomore Taylor Carroll was one of three Mountain Hawks to tally four kills, but also contributed four blocks and four digs. Matula tallied a team-best 28 assists while Brantley posted 19 digs. Lehigh tallied a .163 attacking percentage while limiting Holy Cross to .009. McKernan led Holy Cross with seven kills, 11 assists and nine digs.

Following this weekend's road trip, Lehigh closes out the regular season with five league matches, four of which will be played in the friendly confines of Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. The Mountain Hawks host Loyola at 7 p.m. on Halloween night to kick off the home stand before welcoming Navy Saturday Nov. 1 at 4 p.m.
