WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Lehigh women's basketball team's second-half comeback attempt wasn't enough as the Mountain Hawks fell at Army, 74-63, on Wednesday night. Following a 14-point halftime deficit, the Mountain Hawks (8-6, 1-2 PL) were able to narrow the Black Knight lead to five points midway through the closing half, but Army (11-3, 3-0 PL) held on to claim the win and remain undefeated at home.

"Army played very good defense against us and we struggled to get out of the gates on the offensive end," said head coach Sue Troyan. "The team adjusted well in the second half and played better as a group and we were able to string together a comeback. Now we'll get focused on getting a win at home on Saturday against Loyola."

Junior Sarah Williams led the Mountain Hawks with 13 points, followed by sophomore Kerry Kinek with 11. Three Mountain Hawks tallied five rebounds apiece, while junior Katie O'Reilly snatched a team-leading four steals.

Army's Jen Hazlett scored a game-high 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, while Kelsey Minato followed with 17 points. Olivia Schretzman also scored in double-digits, chipping in 16.

Lehigh finished the game 38.5 percent (20-for-52) from the floor and 23.1 percent (3-for-13) from three-point range. The Black Knights shot 48.2 percent (27-for56) from the field and 35.3 percent (6-of-17) from long distance. Army finished the game with a 38-29 rebound advantage.

A Williams layup got the Mountain Hawks on the board first, but Army responded with eight straight points to force a Lehigh timeout. Burton hit a three out of the break to make the score 8-5 with 16:00 left in the opening term.

Army went on a 9-1 run behind six points from Hazlett before freshman Lexi Martins tossed in the next three points as the score read 17-9 with 12:28 to play. The teams exchanged small runs to work their ways to a 29-20 score in favor of Army with 6:47 left in the half.

The Black Knights erupted on a 12-4 run thanks to four three-pointers, three of which came from Minato. Kinek converted a layup to stop the streak before an Army free throw sent the Mountain Hawks into the locker room trailing 42-28.

The teams exchanged three baskets to open the second half until a jump shot from senior Hilary Weaver sparked an 8-0 Lehigh run and pull the Mountain Hawks within seven at 50-43 with 13:17 on the clock. The Mountain Hawks worked their way to as close as five at 52-47 with another Weaver jumper, but Army kept answering Lehigh's points with baskets of its own.

The Mountain Hawks were down by five again at 58-53 with 7:34 to play until four unanswered Army points stretched the Black Knight lead. Another exchange of points put the score at 66-58 with under four minutes to play.

Two Army free throws were followed were followed by a Burton three-pointer, but the Black Knights notched the next six points to take a 74-61 lead with under 30 seconds to play.
The Mountain Hawks return home to host league newcomer Loyola on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Stabler Arena. The game can be viewed for free on the Patriot League Network and fans can purchase tickets by calling 610-7LU-GAME or by visiting LehighTickets.com.
