BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh returns home for the first time in nearly two months as the Mountain Hawks meet longtime rival Navy in the annual Billy Sheridan Memorial Dual, Friday night inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. The Mountain Hawks will be looking to bounce back from a tough 33-7 setback at No. 6 Cornell last Sunday, a loss that saw Lehigh win just two bouts. Sophomore Mason Beckman and freshman Elliot Riddick delivered Lehigh's two bout wins with Beckman providing bonus points with a major decision win at 133.
Â
Navy has wrestled just two duals this season, but has won both in impressive fashion, including a 26-12 win over Maryland last weekend. Lehigh and Navy are meeting for the 94th time and the Mountain Hawks can even the all-time series with a victory on Friday night.
Â
Friday's dual marks the tenth consecutive season that Lehigh's legendary former coach, Billy Sheridan, is honored with a single dual meet against a high profile opponent. This year marks the fourth year in a row that the single Sheridan Dual pits Lehigh against an EIWA rival. From 2000-2003 Lehigh hosted the Sheridan Duals, a series of duals in which the Mountain Hawks faced three opponents on the first or second Saturday in December at Stabler Arena. Before that, Lehigh hosted the Sheridan Tournament, which began in 1979.
Â
Beckman made the most of his deferred eligibility season in 2012-13 posting an impressive 39-4 record competing unattached in open tournaments. Beckman won five open tournament titles last season and placed in three others, including a fourth place finish at the Midlands Championships. Beckman is off to a 14-2 start this season, which includes a fifth place finish at the Midlands. He is the only Mountain Hawk to compete and win in all nine of Lehigh's duals so far this season.
Â
Navy enters Friday's dual with a 2-0 record. The Midshipmen have primarily competed in tournament competition so far this season but they have impressed in both of their duals thus far. Navy's first dual was a 33-3 rout of Boston University back on December 14, while last Saturday the Mids dominated in-state rival Maryland 26-12 in Annapolis. The Mids have also hosted the Navy Classic and competed in the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational and the Southern Scuffle.
Â
Despite having just one wrestler ranked by Amateur Wrestling News, sophomore Mathew Miller at 174, Navy features a deep and solid lineup from top to bottom. Junior Peyton Walsh is ranked 18th at 165 by InterMat. Navy had five wrestlers represented in the most recent EIWA rankings with Colton Rasche (133), Alex Johnson (149) and Bobby Burg (157) joining Miller and Walsh.
Â
Navy is Lehigh's second most-often wrestled opponent behind Penn State. The Mountain Hawks are wrestling the Mids in a dual for the 63rd straight year. Lehigh has won 15 of the last 17 and can even the all-time series against the Mids with a win in Friday's 94th meeting between the rivals.
Â
Friday's match gets underway at 7 p.m. from Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. Tickets can be purchased by calling 610-7LU-GAME, by logging on to LehighTickets.com, or by visiting the Grace Hall ticket office on match night.
