Mountain Hawks set to hit the road for the first time this season

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After a 12 game homestand to open up the season, the Lehigh volleyball team will hit the road for the first time this weekend to take on Army and Holy Cross. The Mountain Hawks will travel to West Point, N.Y. for a 7 p.m. match on Friday before heading to Worcester, Mass. for a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday.
Lehigh is coming off an impressive 3-1 win over rival Lafayette in its Patriot League opener Wednesday night. The win gave Lehigh its fourth straight victory, to up the team's record to 9-3. The victory marked the first time since 2009 that Lehigh has won its Patriot League opener.
Senior Courtney McCutchan and junior Jade Van Streepen both tallied double-doubles in the match against Lafayette, while sophomore setter Amy Matula racked up a season-high 51 assists. Junior Kaylynn Genemaras tallied 17 kills. Van Streepen and Genemaras lead the team with 104 kills apiece this season, while senior libero Rachel Charles has tallied 139 digs. The Mountain Hawks have notched an impressive 96 service aces so far this year, an average of 2.13 aces per set, which leads the Patriot League and is the third highest average in the country.
Army will head into Friday night's match with a 3-7 record through non-league play. The Black Knights are coming off a 1-2 showing in the Service Academy Challenge last weekend. Army won a close 3-2 match against Air Force before falling in straight sets to No. 8 Stanford and 3-1 to Yale. Freshman Olivia Fairfield leads the Black Knights with 117 kills, followed by senior Margaux Jarka with 116. Junior Mary Vaccaro has tallied 288 assists and senior libero D.J. Phee has notched 199 digs.
This will be the 44th all-time meeting between Army and Lehigh, with the Black Knights holding the 32-11 advantage. Lehigh will be looking for its first win over Army since 2003.
Following the match in West Point, Lehigh will head to Holy Cross to face a 5-5 Crusaders team. Holy Cross is coming off a 3-0 sweep of Quinnipiac on Wednesday night. The Crusaders will face Bucknell on Friday before they take on Lehigh on Saturday. Holy Cross is led by freshman Natalie Welsch who has tallied 105 kills. Freshman Katie McKernan has notched 227 assists.
Lehigh leads the all-time series with Holy Cross 32-11, as the two teams head into their 44th meeting on Saturday. The Mountain Hawks will be looking for their 11th straight win over Holy Cross. A live broadcast of the match will be available for free via the Patriot League Network.
Following the short road trip, the Mountain Hawks will return home next weekend to face new Patriot League member Loyola and Navy inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall.
