BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh men's basketball team held its annual “Zell” Awards Banquet and 2012-13 award winners were announced last month (Saturday, Apr. 14) at Lamberton Hall on campus. The dinner included a welcome from Associate Athletic Director Bill Griffin, remarks from a standout senior class, an awards ceremony, special banquet video and more.
The Mountain Hawks finished their season 21-10, their third 20-win season and national postseason appearance in the last four years. Lehigh advanced to the Patriot League Semifinals for a fourth straight season before dropping a heartbreaker at Wyoming in the College Basketball Invitational.
Senior Holden Greiner earned the team's Athlete of the Year Award following a very successful senior campaign. Greiner started in all 31 games and averaged 13.2 points and a team-leading 6.7 rebounds per game. He was second on the team in points scored (409) and eclipsed 1,000 career points in the Patriot League Semifinals at Lafayette. In doing so, Greiner became the third player in his class to reach that milestone. The Traverse City, Mich. native was also named First Team All-Patriot League for the first time in his career.
Senior Gabe Knutson earned the Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award for the second straight year, matching an outstanding on-court performance with strong work in the classroom. The Urbandale, Iowa native averaged 13.9 points per game and also led the team with 416 points on the season. Knutson earned Academic All-Patriot League for a third straight season and was named a nominee for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award.
Senior C.J. McCollum received the Coaches Award, recognizing outstanding leadership and work ethic, both on and off the court. Before a season-ending injury sidelined him in January, McCollum averaged 23.9 points per game and scored 287 points in 12 games. He was leading the nation in scoring at the time of his injury, but continued to make his presence felt with his off-court leadership as the Mountain Hawks won their third straight game at Bucknell while reaching 20 wins for the third time in four seasons.
The senior trio of McCollum, Knutson and Greiner combined for 4,900 career points as they leave as the winningest class in program history.
Clutch's Crew, Lehigh's spirit group, received the Sixth Man award. Alex Merluzzi and Nevin Sackson were there to accept the award. The Mountain Hawks' student attendance skyrocketed last season, in large part due to the efforts of Clutch's Crew.
