Lehigh earns hard-fought road win at Colgate

VERONA, N.Y. – The Lehigh men's tennis team posted its second straight Patriot League win as the Mountain Hawks went on the road to defeat Colgate 6-1 Sunday at the Turning Stone Resort. The Mountain Hawks swept three tough doubles matches and won the first four singles flights and five of six singles matches overall to earn the victory.
Lehigh improves to 14-4 overall and 3-1 in the Patriot League with the win, while Colgate falls to 7-9 and 1-3 in league matches.
Senior Matt Savran continued his recent roll with wins at No. 2 doubles and No. 4 singles. Savran teamed with freshman Jeremy Kochman to defeat Luke Gensburg and Harry Jewett 8-5 in doubles play. In singles action, Savran posted his 13th victory of the year with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Nick Laub.The Mountain Hawks' third doubles team of senior Andrew Krentz and sophomore Ben Gilman won 8-6 over Bobby Berkowitz and Alan Pleat, while the top team of junior Mark Goldberg and sophomore Mitchell Petersen held off Alec Goldstein and Laub 9-7.
Lehigh clinched the match with straight set wins at the second through fourth flights. In addition to Savran's win, Petersen downed Goldstein 6-2, 7-6 at No. 3 singles, while Gilman won 6-4, 6-1 over Berkowitz at No. 2 singles to clinch the match. Goldberg returned to Lehigh's singles lineup at the No. 1 spot, and defeated Gensburg in three sets.
With the match clinched, the bottom two flights were played as eight-game pro sets. Colgate picked up its lone point as Pleat won in a tiebreak over Krentz at No. 5 singles. At the No. 6 flight, junior Timur Chernykh won 8-3 over John Beam to close out the match.
The Mountain Hawks will begin the final week of regular season play when they travel to Bucknell on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. match. Lehigh will close out the regular season with a home match against Navy Saturday April 13 at 10 a.m.
