Lehigh downs Navy 5-2 to complete undefeated home season

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's tennis team completed a perfect season on its home courts with a 5-2 win over defending Patriot League champion Navy Saturday on the Ulrich Varsity Courts. The Mountain Hawks lost a tightly-contested doubles point but battled back to win five of six singles matches as Lehigh defeated Navy in Bethlehem for the third straight time.
With the win Lehigh improves to 15-4 overall and 4-1 in the Patriot League. Lehigh also moves to 11-0 at home this season. The Mountain Hawks now have the upper hand for the No. 2 seed in next weekend's Patriot League Tournament. Navy is now 15-11 overall and 3-2 in league play.
The doubles point came down to a tiebreak at the No. 2 flight. Navy's Calvin Mark and Peter McDonald won 8-1 over junior Mark Goldberg and sophomore Mitchell Petersen at No. 1 doubles, while senior Andrew Krentz and sophomore Ben Gilman posted an 8-6 win over Alex Gaines and Alex Sisk at No. 3 doubles for Lehigh. The No. 2 flight matched Lehigh senior Matt Savran and freshman Jeremy Kochman against Blake Daniel and Nicholas Gutsche. The Navy duo captured the tiebreak 8-6 to win the match 8-7 and give the visiting Mids a 1-0 lead.
In singles play, Mark won 6-2, 6-4 over Goldberg at the top flight for Navy's only other point, but Lehigh won the remaining five matches in straight sets. Gilman won 6-3, 6-4 over McDonald at No. 2 singles and Petersen downed Daniel 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Savran's 6-4
, 6-3 win over Gutsche at the No. 4 flight put Lehigh up 3-2 before junior Timur Chernykh clinched the match for Lehigh with a win over Sisk at No. 6 singles. Chernykh won the first set 7-3 in a tiebreak and then took the second set 6-2.

The Mountain Hawks will close out the regular season on Monday when they travel to Bucknell for a match that was rescheduled from last Wednesday due to rain. The match is set for a 3 p.m. start.
