LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team opened up Patriot League play with a 6-1 win over Bucknell in the first game of a doubleheader Friday at Becker Field. The Mountain Hawks had to settle for a split on the opening day of league play as the Bison rallied for a 2-1 win in the nightcap, in a game that was called due to darkness after five and a half innings.
Freshman Alexis Watanabe went 4-for-6 in the two games to lead the Mountain Hawks, who are now 12-12-1 on the season. Bucknell is now 7-18 overall. Both teams are 1-1 in league play.
Watanabe and freshman Morgan Decker led Lehigh with two hits apiece in the opener. The Mountain Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a RBI ground out by senior Kristen Mitchell and a wild pitch that allowed sophomore Emma Capetz to score from third.
Lehigh tacked on two more runs in the top of the fourth as sophomore Cassie Waggy led off with a triple to right field and then scored on a double to right by freshman Carissa Zito. Three batters later, Mitchell picked up another RBI as Zito beat the throw home on a fielder's choice.
Decker led off the fifth with a double to right, and then scored Lehigh's fifth run on a single to right center by senior Liz Lucas.
Bucknell scored its only run of the opener on a solo home run by Colie Escobar in the bottom of the fifth, but Lehigh tacked on another run in the sixth when Capetz led off with a single and then scored on a Watanabe single up the middle.
Senior Becca Bliss earned the win for the Mountain Hawks, with a complete game effort. Bliss allowed a run on four hits and struck out three Bison to even her record at 6-6. Three Bison pitchers saw action in the opener with Amanda Fazio taking the loss after allowing four runs in three innings of work.
In game two, Lehigh took a 1-0 lead on an RBI infield single by Capetz in the top of the second, but the Bison rallied with two runs off sophomore Emily Bausher in the bottom of the fourth. Cheyanna Young was hit by a pitch and then scored on a triple by Tori Robinson. Kristen Zahn then singled up the middle, plating Robinson with the go-ahead run.
Lehigh out Bucknell 6-4 in game two, but the Mountain Hawks left seven runners on base. Watanabe and Waggy recorded two hits apiece to pace Lehigh in the nightcap.
The Mountain Hawks and Bison will wrap-up their series with a doubleheader Saturday at Becker Field with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
