3/24/2013 3:43:00 AM | Men's Tennis

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Lehigh opened Patriot League play in dominant fashion Saturday with a 7-0 blanking of Holy Cross at Army's Lichtenberg Tennis Center. The Mountain Hawks swept all nine matches contested, dropping just three games in doubles and a total of seven games in the six singles matches as Lehigh opens league play with a win and improves to 12-3 overall.

In doubles, Lehigh's No. 3 team of senior Andrew Krentz and sophomore Ben Gilman continued to shine, with an 8-0 shutout of Connor McCann and Scott Brownell at the No. 3 flight. Lehigh's No. 2 team of senior Matt Savran and freshman Jeremy Kochman dropped just one game, while the Mountain Hawks' top team of junior Mark Goldberg and sophomore Mitchell Petersen lost just two against Ryan Sullivan and Nick Berrettini.

Gilman was one of two Mountain Hawks to win 6-0, 6-0 in singles as he defeated Berrettini at the No. 1 flight, while Kochman also won by the same scores against Jeff Paadre at No. 6 singles.

Savran dropped just one game to Chris Brosnan in a straight set win at No. 3 singles, while Petersen, Krentz and Chernykh all won by identical 6-1, 6-1 scores.

It will be a short turnaround for the Mountain Hawks, who will be back on the courts Sunday morning to take on Army at 10 a.m. Lehigh defeated Army during the regular season in 2012, but the Black Knights eliminated the Mountain Hawks in the Patriot League semifinals.
