HOUSTON, Texas - Following a hard-fought game at Fordham Friday, the Lehigh men's basketball returns to action less than 48 hours later in Houston against the Cougars. Tipoff on Sunday is set for 2 p.m. ET (1 p.m. locally) on ESPN3. Sunday marks the first of four straight games in the Progressive Legends Classic as Lehigh heads to Pittsburgh on Wednesday before playing two games in South Dakota the following Monday and Tuesday (Nov. 25 and 26).
Â
This marks the third straight season the Mountain Hawks play in a preseason tournament. In 2011-12, Lehigh played in the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer before playing in the NIT Season Tipoff last year.
Â
Sunday will be a homecoming for senior Mackey McKnight who grew up in New Orleans before moving to Houston during elementary school. He played high school basketball at Langham Creek and upwards of 100 friends and family are expected on Sunday. McKnight is coming off a monster game at Fordham where he scored a career-high 31 points (22 coming in the first half). He scored 12 straight Lehigh points during one stretch, adding five assists for the game to eclipse 400 in his decorated career. Just like that, McKnight stands only 41 points away from 1,000 in his career, looking to become the fourth Mountain Hawk in as many seasons to eclipse that milestone. C.J. McCollum did so in 2010-11, Gabe Knutson in 2011-12 and Holden Greiner in 2012-13.
Â
Junior Corey Schaefer also set a career high for points on Friday (13) while tying a career-high five rebounds. Sophomore Jesse Chuku grabbed 12 rebounds to eclipse double figures for the second time in three games. Freshmen Tim Kempton and Austin Price added 11 and seven points, respectively, despite some foul trouble.
Â
The Lehigh offense has come alive following the first half in its season opener at Minnesota. The Mountain Hawks erased a 10-0 deficit to take a 44-41 halftime lead Friday, marking their fourth straight half with 40+ points.
Â
Houston is part of the new American Athletic Conference which was formed as part of the Big East realignment. The former Big East schools that have football are part of this conference (UConn, Rutgers, Louisville, etc.) along with teams like Houston, UCF and Memphis (among others).
Â
Sunday marks only the second-ever meeting between Lehigh and Houston, with the Cougars winning the first matchup on Dec. 4, 1993 by a 96-74 final.
Â
Currently a member of the new American Athletic Conference and formally of Conference USA, Houston has a storied basketball history which includes Final Fours in the 1980s while seeing several big names come through (like Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler). The 2013-14 Cougars are 3-0 with wins over Texas State, Texas Pan-American and UTSA. TaShawn Thomas leads the team in scoring (18.3 points) and rebounding (9.0). Danuel House averages 14.7 points and 5.7 rebounds while L.J. Rose has posted 11.0 point and 1.3 rebounding averages, respectively. Houston has shot an impressive 53.2 percent from the field while holding opponents to just 40.0 percent shooting.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will continue the Legends Classic when they travel to Pittsburgh on Wednesday to face the Panthers. Opening tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
